does Kessel/Beauchemin challenge Schenn for the 'C'?
are they 'C' worthy?
Kessel seems to be set up as a cornerstone for the franchise, but will Burke make him captain? if he has a stellar year, and puts up points in the playoffs (!!!), will you want him as your captain? would he be captain based on how much Burke gave up for him?
Beauchemin could be a great Captain for this team. he could be a difference maker this year and more to come. he's 29 and in 5 years could still make a difference. he does a lot of intangibles on the ice that show leadership qualities.
I don't see how a 20 year old is the favourite. Beauch and Komi are the front runners, and Kaberle should get consideration ahead of Luke as well. In a few years from now, yeah, Schenn has captain written all over him.
I think a team without a captain sends a terrible message to the team. This team is gunnin for the playoffs, and a captain will be named once he emerges during the season.
We should not have a captain for another 2 years at least.
This isn't just another C, this is the TML, the legendary, notorious Leafs.
You can't go from having guys like Clark, Gilmour and Sundin to just another defencemen.
The player has to be a super star, has to play with heart, has to put up big numbers, has to be the obvious fan favourite, has to have the total respect of every player on their team, has to be a clutch performer, and if Burkes system has to be able to stick up for the younge guys that join his team.
This will take time, I think Schenn can develope into that kind of guy but with lots of work. He needs to improve his game all around, clean up some corners on his D-game, maybe learn to play a little bit of O. The fans needs to change their current lust for him into a deep trust and love that can only develope over time, and every other player needs to look up to him, and that will take some time aswell.
Kessel will never be a captain. He might get an A if he is the kind of guy who gets his ego stroked by that kind of thing.
Schenn is still 3-4 years away from really understanding the league, the media and everything that goes with it. He needs a few years of playoffs to determine if he is captain material.
Beauch is probably the only option if the choice is "We need a captain", but there is no rush.
How does NOT having a captain send a terrible message to the team? Like , really?
I think whomever will be captain will be a person who has leadership ability and will stay in Toronto for eons, they're not just going to FLING out a C for the sake of flinging one out. If that's Beauchamin, Kessel, Komisarek or Schenn, then good on whoever wins. During the mean time, if any of them WANTS to be the captain, step up and show Ron and Brian why they deserve it. Then give it out. that's all.

IMVHO the captain does not need to be superstar and big point producer...but he will need to exemplify whatever Burke/Wilson want him to exemplify. I think that Beauch and Komi both have great qualities that the other players can look up to. The captain's work ethic and professionalism have to be beyond reproach, they must set the bar for the rest of the team.

Well I think a team without a captain is usually competing for a top 5 draft pick not for the Cup. A team without a captain, is a team in a state of rebuild (at best)...how many teams have done made any noise in the playoffs without a captain? Or made the playoffs? Non captained teams are non playoff teams, and Burke will no longer allow that to happen.
But I do agree, someone will have to step up to earn the "C"...it won't just be handed out like that.

And how many teams name the wrong guy captain, and suck because of it. How many guys have had the pressure of captaincy way to young?

Paraphrasing: This is the Toronto Maple Leafs, a world wide brand with great history. You cannot just name a Captain; it has to be someone that is special with significant qualities. It will be up to Ron Wilson to name the Captain at some point down the road, and that Burke will not be apart of the decision making process.
