Toronto Star: Stajan or Mitchell will skate with Kessel, unless Phil plays at centre

It took Matt Stajan all of about one second to answer the question.

The question? Would you like to centre a line with Phil Kessel, once the newest Leaf and 36-goal scorer from a year ago returns from rehabbing his shoulder surgery (about mid-November)?

"Well, sure ... anytime you have a guy who scores 36 goals, yeah, that's the guy you'd want to play with," Stajan said.

Since Kessel landed with the Leafs after a trade with Boston on Friday night, there's been a whirlwind of speculation about who the 21-year-old sniper might be paired with.

When Kessel donned the Leafs jersey for the first time on Saturday, posing for the cameras, he couldn't wipe the smile off his face.

Leafs GM Brian Burke ordered, "Put on a mean face or something," to which Kessel replied, "I'm trying, but I can't."

Eventually the thoughts returned to who would centre a line with Kessel.

The easy answer was Stajan, who had a career high in assists last season (40) and also led the Leafs in that department. The Leafs have not had a 36-goal scorer since Mat Sundin netted 37 in 2002-03. But Sundin was himself a centre which raises the question, is it possible for the Wisconsin native to make the switch to centre?

There was talk previously in Boston, that Kessel could be entertaining that thought himself.

Yeaaah, it better be Stajan. I just don't see Johnny Mitchell as our number one centre. That may just depress me.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mitchell try it out for a few games. He always seems to exceed expectations when he's put into more important situations. I think his hard work would open up alot of space for Kessel, also his hands and playmaking skills are pretty underrated.

Been drooling over a potential Kessel - Kadri combo the minute the offer sheet new broke. Both shifty, both fast smart players. They could put together some highlight reel goals.

I think I'd put a banger on the other wing to open up some space, maybe Stalberg...

Stalberg - Kadri - Kessel

Yes please.

That does look like a promising line right there . I'm personally so happy the rumours o stalberg being included in the trade for Kessel were not true! He is gonna be a special player me thnks.
