I got a general consensus that Colorado and Vancouver both have some cap issues. I also have heard several times that the player on either team that could be moved if trade is right would be Pavol Demitra for Vancouver or possibly Milan Hejduk for Colorado.
I know neither is really a Kessel, but either of those two are sure fire top 2 line forwards and could provide us with that extra power to get into the playoffs.
We really do not have alot of other options to obtain a top 2 line forward.
Colorado has cap space, but has been very up front about rebuilding. They know they are likely looking at dead last in the west again...Hejduk is a UFA at the end of the year and not likely in their long-term plans.
With that said, I don't see the need to get someone just to get someone. I know that it's just preseason, but it's hard to not be impressed with what Santorelli, Wilson and even Jones have done thus far. There's no reason to make a move just to make one. Kessel was a special case.
As a Vancouver fan, I could definitely part with Demitra. He really is the extra piece in Vancouver right now along with one of the 8 defenceman. I think he could be had for next to nothing too. All the canucks would be looking for is a 3rd rounder or maybe a mid-level prospect. The other sticking point is that he wont be back until about 6 weeks into the season after offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum.
Demitra could be an interesting experiment. Some old-timers may remember that we were rumored to be going after him pretty hard whenever LA signed him after his stint in St Louis. I think that was the year we signed Kariya?
