Flyers Trade Patrik Hersley to Nashville; Betts to be Signed Soon

Quote:
The Flyers got a bit of contract relief Wednesday afternoon when they traded defensive prospect Patrik Hersley to Nashville for future considerations, CSNPhilly.com has learned.

This move reduces the number of pro contracts the Flyers have from 49 to 48. The NHL maximum is 50. General manager Paul Holmgren had said recently that he was hoping to gain some additional contract space in case he needed it this fall.

It is expected the Flyers will sign Blair Betts to a contract very soon. Had that happened earlier this week, the Flyers would have reached the 50 contract limit.

Near last minute move, but that's fine. Good move by Homer.

Unreal it took this long for Blair Betts to get signed by anyone. Just when he thought he was at a point in his career where he could make the most money, he barely found a job.

I'll be curious how many goofy "dump" moves like this go down in the next week or so.

I'm pretty sure he means league wide, and I agree, I'm expecting a few more.

Fine with me. That means that we've been left with literaly nothing for Denis Gauthier and our 2nd.

I am glad to hear that Betts is will be under contract soon. He is one of those players who brings that tenacity, winning the battles in the corners in the faceoff circles and on the PK, that are absolutely crucial to any team looking to go deep in the playoffs. It might be premature, but if its true then welcome aboard Betts!!!

I liked how Betts played. We needed that fourth line center guy who can kill penalties and win a good amount of faceoffs.

Its terrific to hear betts has earned a contract. He works so hard and is great in key components of the game, like face offs, the pk and working in the corners. I was reading about him more in depth on the rangers fan board and every single comment was pissed at the fact their team lost betts and he went to a rival team, which makes me very happy.

Betts is going to be awesome for the Flyers this year. Now if only we could dump off Jones somewhere .

Betts on board is a good idea.

Malhotra was signed to 1 year 700K contract with SJ. Homer should of invited him instead of Bell.

Any move that makes Betts available to sign is a good move in my book.

Hersley sucks anyway. If the Flyers get a coupon for a buy one get one free quarter pounder its a win for the Flyers

Good that Betts will be signed soon. I'd rather have homer trade away Jones very soon.

Maybe along with Cote to the Islanders for a 2nd round 2010 draft pick. They seriously need a fighter on that team badly. And honestly, Jones is better than some of their other d-men.

Malhotra refuses to play a 4th line role, and I think Betts is actually better in most areas besides faceoffs

Because he is not 4th line player. If Jones was out Flyers could sign Betts and Malhotra for under 1.5 and have over 1M in cap space.
