Man, we are really thin up front now that JVR is probably going to be in the NHL and we're low on high picks for the next 2 drafts, not awesome.

DeSerres is dangerously on the edge of being a non-prospect.

JVR was ranked as the #15 prospect overall. I think he deserves to be in the top 10, or at least ahead of the 4 players in front of him, which would make him #11. I think he'll prove his worth this season with the Flyers, and then he wont even be a prospect anymore, so it wont matter.

They sure ignored him at camp. It looks like guys like Laliberte will get a look before him. I guess it depends on what happens at center though.

What is happening with the Phantoms and Stephenson? As far as I know, he doesn't have a contract. But no word if he has been sent home. Did he play on Saturday?

MORRISON MAKES 22 SAVES AS SASKATOON BEATS REGINA
Quote:
Adam Morrison turned aside 22 shots as the Saskatoon Blades upended the Pats 4-1 in Western Hockey League action.

Morrison, a third-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2009 draft, lowered his goals-against average to 1.97 while improving to 11-2-2 all-time in his WHL career.

So far in 3 starts Eriksson has a 1.93 GAA and .938 SV% with one shutout for Leksands in the Allsvenskan.

Yeah, but hopefully he'll prove himself to everybody this year, like Bobby Ryan did last year.

Well, at least Giroux was ranked as the #10 "prospect". So, having two players in the top 15 is pretty good, even though these lists, and the way they're compiled, are always a bit fishy.

Hopefully these two guys keep it going, and give us a couple of options at goalie going forward. I'm thinking these are the guys to watch, as DeSerres has stunk since being drafted, and the rest of the goalie prospects are basically just also-rans.

I was on the top 50 committee. It wasn't easy figuring out spots for players in the top 20 because, while everyone understood that some of the players had good starts in the NHL last season, there were a lot of other factors to take into consideration.

Giroux moved around in the lower half of top 10 a bit and then finally finished out at 10. Van Riemsdyk moved down to 15.

Remember that this list was worked on before preseason began. The Calder list, that doesn't include van Riemsdyk, was also discussed long before the start of preseason.

I mentioned that van Riemsdyk would likely start the year in the Phantoms which would hurt his Calder chances, and I was completely wrong. He didn't make the rookie of the year possibility list.

No offense and I'm glad that HF even put in the time to do these rankings, but it's extremely hard for me to believe that anyone could watch JVR for an entire season last year and not rank him as a top-10 prospect.

Obviously HF does that this for free which is a huge factor, but hell, even a PM to me or FireStevensdotcom could have done the job. To me, I think HF bought into his stats rather than looking at the overall picture. I mean, look at the post history in our old prospect thread, a few of us (who actually watched JVR consistently) were constantly saying that he had drastically improved his all-around game despite playing out of position with horrible linemates. I should add that he was completely misused at the WJCs and while everyone likes to just say he wasn't that great, no one bothered to look in-depth to the Team USA system and ask why Wilson, JVR, and Schroeder were played together, it was just accepted.

Now he's doing it in training camp and I'll admit that even I'm surprised at how quickly he's acclimated, but all the tools, the work ethic, the defensive play, and the offensive wizardry were on display for pretty much all of last season.

I dunno, again, I can't be that critical of HF, you guys provide us with the free boards and free articles that can prompt debates like this one! But at the same time, it's amazing to me that JVR is ranked about 7-8 spots below where he should be without a single word about his amazing sophomore season where he led a UNH team to the NCAAs and nearly knocked off BU in the regionals.

Obviously HF does that this for free which is a huge factor, but hell, even a PM to me or FireStevensdotcom could have done the job. I understand your concerns. I was working on the Anaheim Ducks top 10 when another writer was working on the Flyers. I added some notes and some things were changed around a bit. Some things were not. All of these rankings are an entire process done by multiple writers that all have different opinions.

When we were working on the top 50 I expressed my concerns about a number of players ranked higher than both Giroux and JVR as well as my concerns about van Riemsdyk. Everything was taken into consideration, and some things, for every player, were taken into consideration a little too much.

Though I didn't think van Riemsdyk would be truly NHL ready for at least a season and a half with the Phantoms, I have always known that he is an incredible talent.

It was actually an article about how unfairly van Riemsdyk had been treated by everyone forming an opinion about his status as a prospect that I submitted to HockeysFuture when I applied. I've watched him just as much as you have, even before I began writing here.

These post-draft rankings for the top 50 though are increasingly hard. It'd be nice if we had the preseason to work with since that's the best test we'll have for many of these prospects, but everyone wants a list from us so they know what to expect in preseason and throughout the year.

Thanks for your clarification, please don't think I'm attacking you personally (or anyone for that matter).

Obviously ranking these guys is a tough process and I don't envy those who have to do it, just seems to me that on recent lists, HF has tended to favor recently drafted players (Hodgson) over guys who were drafted a longer time ago, but maybe be more accomplished at this stage in their development and who have equivalent potential.
