Kessel isn't a franchise forward. Franchise forwards are guys like Kovalchuk, Iginla, getzlaf etc etc. Kessel may one day reach a similar level, but its unlikely and certaintly a few seasons away if it ever happens. I consider guys like Backstrom and Semin not to be franchise forwards, and they are better players than Kessel.

Kessel shouldn't be the centerpiece, and i highly doubt if he is ever consistently a top ten scorer in the NHL. He is a great asset, and this trade was fair value for both teams, but lets not exaggerate Kessel and his abilities.

Sexton offered him a 2-way, he turned it down.

Ah, OK. I thought we just let him walk. Yep, he'd be penciled in, I'm sure.

And people here were upset that we didn't QO him. He can't even make the Thrash.

As was just said...we did tender him one apparently, he just refused it. And the Thrashers are a pretty decent team, they went on a monster tear at the end of last season. They're not going to be typical Thrashers this coming season, but I still thought he'd make the team.

Apparently Eklund thinks we will trade Horton to Vancouver for a "defenseman and a top prospect."

He's (Stewart) on waivers to be sent down, so he might get picked up by another team.

I guess the pastures aren't always greener elsewhere. Stewie turned down our 2-way contract b/c he thought he'd be penciled in on Atlanta's roster for sure. The guy just can't put it together for whatever reasons - talent, work ethic, whatever.

I agree, let's make this a "No Eklund" zone.

I don't know. He's good for comic relief at least? Depends on how often we need a laugh during the season.

Did Panthers really tender him an offer or did they just cut him loose? Or was offer made after they didn't qualify him?If they made him qualifying offer and he refused it, he'd still be Panthers' property or was he traded to Atlanta?

I don't think we tendered him a QO though we may have (I assume so) tendered an offer that was below QO levels.

I can't remember if it was a QO or an offer after the QO period expired, but I def remember it was a 2-way which Stewart wouldn't accept and the T-rashers was a 1-way deal. I have no qualms about losing Stewart. He may have been a player in the old Keenen-esque NHL, but not this team or this faster, more skilled-based NHL.

riiight. stewie is a pretty good skater for his size. he's a much better skater than some guys who are having great nhl careers right now. he's also got decent hands. he just hasn't been able to put it all together. some of that's certainly circumstances.

Skoula signed with Pens. So he can make the Stanley Cup champions, but can't make the Panthers? Does this make any sense to anyone?

Our defense seems to be deeper than theirs. And we have young guys coming up the pipe that have a legit shot at ice time. No big deal.

He was cut by CBJ, too. He made the Pens, good for him, but I think other than Koistinen (just cause my jury is still out on him), I'd rather have what we have.

Saw that, he'll likely find somewhere to go.

Lots of interesting players on waivers. Bourque and Lashoff are a couple I wouldn't mind seeing us claim.

I thought the same, Bourque could be a pretty good pick-up.

I was kind of hoping we'd pick up Stralman, who got traded to Columbus. They only paid a third rounder for him too. Lots of potential there.
