What Viqsi said. Tolly was hurt, A LOT. He was depth, he was character and was loved and appreciated by his teammates, but he was hurt all the time. I don't think anyone wanted to see him go, but you just can't resign a guy who is hurt all the time.

Modin, for as good of a player as he can be when he is healthy, is the same way. As soon as his contract is up (if not before) he will be finished as a jacket.

I'm hoping to watch the game via streaming tonight, if so Skoula will be my #1 interest. Of all the posts about him from helpful fello fans outside of the Jacket world the one concern I have is his reluctance to use his large frame in a physical way. It goes beyond Hitch hockey, we need our bigger guys to use their size.

I'm hoping he has two good games, if not I'm hoping Howson keeps a close eye on the waiver wire..

How much did he make last year? And how much does anybody think he'd ask for out of a deal should we offer one...similar money, or a "look, I'm desperate" paycut.

Tollefsen was a nice guy and a good teammate. Unfortunately, he was a defenseman and not a particularly good one. For that matter, not a particularly serviceable one.

To make a baseball comparison, he reminded me of Shawon Dunston.

Asked if he would consider signing a two-way contract that would pay him less money if he's sent to the minor leagues, Skoula smiled and said: "I'm up for anything."

I wasn't impressed too much with him last night. To me, he was Backmanesque.

How often are you impressed with any third pairing dman?

He is a steady, nhl experienced third pairing guy. He isn't going to do anything dazzling.

I would rather have a 7th dman who is capable that has played 700+ NHL games than a guy who is borderline that hasn't played any.

I agree, I think Skoula will be here to start the season unless something better comes across the waiver wire.

Agreed.

I don't get what people are expecting out of a 6-7 d-man.

Backman would have been, dare I say, "solid" if he had made only $1 million per season.

GMSH?

edit- from Hitch:

"The thing that he brings to our team, which is significant, is the ability to evade the first forechecker and get the puck out of the zone," Hitchcock said. "When he's on the ice, we don't spend much time in our own zone, which is exactly what the (coaching staff) in Minnesota told us about him

I didn't notice much from him, which I guess is good and bad....the good was he didn't make any bad plays out there...the bad was that he's a big body that doesn't use it to gain leverage on the offensive guy coming down the ice....sooooo....yeah, that's all I have...

I'm guessing in 15 years he forgets this even happened.

Something like that I am sure.

Plain and simple if we didn't get Anton we would likely have kept Skoula. He was fine, but Anton just is more to what we are looking for and fits in better with the direction that our team is heading.

I mentioned this earlier, but here it the link:

I wished we would have kept him AND gotten Stralman. I wonder where we are at with our 50 contracts. We have to be close to 50.

This is what I was hoping.

I'm sure they'll play Skoula when they meet us, motivation matters.

I think the Jackets are thinking long term. Moore should be up next year and they figure that at 23 Stralman has a bigger upside. If he improves enough Howson will nail his contract down, and with Moore and the developing Russell we'll have three puck-moving defensemen, so each line can have a guy with the chops to make that killer first pass.
