His skills don't exactly translate to running a PP. He's a great skater, can rush the puck very well, and has good offensive instincts, but he's not a passing PP QB, which is what the Rangers seem to want.

He'll still play on the PP...I imagine the Rangers will try to split it more evenly than most teams, but he's really not your prototypical PP offensive defenseman

Yup, and MDZ, from what we have seen so far, really is. I would pretty much bank on it that if they both play a full season MDZ will hav a much higher PP to ES point ratio.

My feeling is that Gilroy on the PP is the guy who would be looking for the backdoor play, or sneaking into position for a shot, rather than the one distributing the puck

I'm not so sure about that one. From what I've seen of Gilroy in the preseason and his time at BU, he's more of a distributor than a shooter. Not that he's ever going to be Sergei Zubov, but I'd like to see him develop that type of game, where he's always looking for the tough passing lane to get the puck through. I just hope that if he does, it doesn't make him a target for the "Shoooooooot!" crowd at MSG.

I never said Gilroy was a power play specialist, that should ONLY play power play, now did I? Read, digest, repeat.

The guy has clear offensive skills that easily make him top 4 on the backline. Easily. If he is not going to be used there and signed at that amount of money something is wrong with management which I guess would not be particularly shocking.

and at the same time I don't think anyone said he wouldn't play on the PP at all, so why are you setting up that straw man to knock down?

He'll be on the PP. He just might not start on the first unit if Del Zotto is playing, based on how things seemed to go in preseason and what the Rangers seem to want out of a PP defenseman.

edit: actually I'm wrong! There was some crazy person who made it sound like Gilroy wouldn't get any PP time at all because Del Zotto would play the entire 2 minutes (though not exactly phrased like that)

Thanks for the edit.

It's funny. For all of the hype Rangers fans consistently put on their pipeline of rookies, I think they don't realize that Gilroy might be a very, very nice player to have. A lot of people around the league love this guy, with a few writers mentioning him as a real shot at rookie of the year.

Me too. I also think Anisimov will put a good run for that trophy too. I picked him up on my fantasy hockey team. Who's he playing with?

I like him a lot too, and I don't say that I think he'll be on the second unit because I don't like his skills, I think we're just seeing the Rangers like Del Zotto's passing a whole lot, and also that they'll be giving him the opportunity to make his case as the legit PP QB on the team. And from what I've seen, Del Zotto's passing looks better than Gilroy's

But if Del Zotto doesn't hack it or the PP just struggles in general even if he's doing fine, then I think they'll give Gilroy a look real quick.

Gilroy and MDZ should be running the point on the top unit by years end. I don't see Kotalik lasting all that long there to be honest.

The kid looks like he could be a real gem. I admit I was skeptical when the hype-train came roaring through, but after that NCAA Championship game and the Rangers preseason, I can honestly say the kid has won me over.

He has all the tools to be a great player, and most importantly, the head to put it all together.

How many minutes a game does Del Zotto stand to get with the Rangers?

Quote from Gross about the Rangers working on the PP in practice:

Quote:
- Plenty of work on the power play during this morning's skate: Michael Del Zotto-Ales Kotalik, Marian Gaborik-Vinny Prospal-Ryan Callahan comprised the first unit.
Like I said, I think they'll go with that at first to see what Del Zotto can do, but I also think it'll be more of a 1 minute and off, give the second unit 1 minute of time, type thing. At least for the defense

Third pairing minutes and PP time...probably around 15-17 minutes? Maybe that's a bit high

When I see that first PP unit in print I shudder at the prospects of this team if Gaborik goes down. As it is, it doesn't look like much at all.

I think it kind of depends on which Prospal we're getting. The 70 point Prospal? It's not too shabby then, other than the weak other wing (though a guy like Callahan isn't bad on the PP...opportunistic, garbage goal scorer)

It's hard to look at some teams like Washington and Pittsburgh and not feel horribly inferior, but I still think most teams don't have the all out firepower they do. A lot of teams are more like the Rangers, with one star and some good players. Then again, the Rangers "good" players are somewhat questionable at the moment

I would hope if he starts seeing close to 12 minutes a game, they send him back to junior. Young guys like Del Zotto should be playing a lot of minutes, not sitting on the bench.

Any word on Anisimov? Where's he playing?
