I hope he gets a spot on the top six D. I really like the guy, but he just didn't fit in the Ottawa system. If he can put all his skills together (probably not) then he can be a great player.

Is he going to play forward or defense?

Either way, I knew he was going to get claimed by someone...

Based on the TOI numbers it appears as if Schubert saw plenty of PK time. As to his effectiveness? Need some input from Sens fans

He can PK, but I wouldn't call him outstanding in that regard. He's regressed in several areas of the game, and it's mainly his decision making that's suspect. If he were on Ottawa's lineup today, these guys would be ahead of him:

FW:

Fisher
Alfredsson
Ruutu
Regin
Kelly
Winchester

D:

Kuba
Phillips
Volchenkov
Carkner/Lee
Campoli (though may not be as likely)

Depth is a pretty big issue why he hasn't been able to fit in. A good utility guy, but if you look at everything he can do, there's always a roster player who two who specialize in a specific role and can accomplish way more than he can on a consistent basis.

Considering he played forward most of the season and was placed on defense only for PK, then he is pretty good. He's big and fast, not afraid to take the body but is prone to make really really stupid plays.

For below the league minimum you got yourself a steal.

Schubert's a nice utility player who makes simple plays on the PK. Unfortunately his hockey IQ appears to be very low, so his overall effectiveness takes a huge hit as he's consistently beaten by quicker, smarter players who can corner him into making bad decisions.

Still, at 450K, I think this is an absolutely perfect pickup for the Thrashers and I think he'll be even more effective when given the opportunity to play a 4th line checking role where hockey IQ doesn't really come into play as much as it does on D.

I don't see any room for Schubert. I think that they are going to place him as a forward.

Probably for now, as Colby Armstrong was just placed on the IR. Though I think Schubert is right in the same category with Salmela, Valabik, and Popovic....though a PK D is a real need for the team right now.

During the Sens cup run, he was a PK beast in the playoffs. Overall, I'd say he's decent. His lack of grey matter will often lead to him covering a guy, but not actually covering a guy. He'll be in the right spot, but his man will score anyway.

Schubert is better than Salmela and Popovic.

i knew atlanta was going to pick this guy up, because they didn't really have a 6th solid nhl defenseman. he is brought in for veteran play and plays solid.

Someone called him going to Atlanta yesterday so props to them. It was a classy move by the Sens to place him on re-entry so he could be picked up. Atlanta will use him as a forward. They have room to work with up front now so someone should go to Chicago soon. Could be Gratton?

- Pretty solid on the PK when he keeps it simple.
- Isn't as good defensively at even strength as you'd hope from somebody as big and as mobile as he is. Tends to run around a lot and makes bad decisions.
- Has a 100 MPH slapshot, could used as a 2nd unit pointman.
- Was great on the forecheck as forward, but his enthusiasm had dropped off noticeably. Then again, we played under a passive coach for much of last season and all of our typical forecheckers seemed just as underwhelming as our scorers last year.
- Occasionally takes dumb penalties as a D-man... at bad times.

All in all, I think he's a great project for a coach willing to take him on. He's got a lot of tools (skating, massive size, willing to hit, big shot), but needs to keep his game as simple as possible.

Schubert is a fast hard-hitting energy guy with a hard shot who penalty kills well. He just doesn't make good decisions at times. I rooted for the guy when he was here, he works very hard. Best of luck.

The bad penalties are often interference for squeezing someone out along the boards before they can get to the puck. Which he should have learned a long time ago not to do.
