TALE OF THE TAPE
Ovechkin and the Capitals are coming off an impressive season opener going into the first game of their home schedule Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Last season saw Washington win a playoff series for the first time in 11 years, but it ended on a sour note as the Capitals lost 6-2 at home to Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Ovechkin scored but it came after the Capitals trailed 5-0.

Ovechkin's regular-season debut, and that of his team, did nothing to show Washington won't be a Stanley Cup contender again.

Ovechkin got off to a quick start in his quest for a third consecutive Hart Trophy as league MVP, scoring twice in a 4-1 victory at Boston on Thursday night.

"We want to be on top of everybody," said Ovechkin, who led the league last season with 56 goals.

Brooks Laich had two power-play goals and an assist while the Capitals held Boston - the top team in the East during the 2008-09 regular season - scoreless in five chances with the man advantage.

"If you could bottle that game up, we'd take it," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Every night."

Boudreau also was pleased with the performance of Jose Theodore, who was pulled in last season's opener and ended up losing the starting job to rookie Semyon Varlamov after the first game of the playoffs. Theodore made 19 saves Thursday and came within 12:04 of a shutout.

It seems likely he'll be back in net as Washington tries to win its eighth straight home opener.

The Capitals started 18-1-1 at home last season, with Ovechkin totaling 18 goals and 13 assists. They ended up matching Boston for the second-most home wins (29) during the regular season but went 4-4 in the playoffs at the Verizon Center.

Toronto has missed the last four postseasons but came away somewhat encouraged from its opener despite losing, 4-3 in overtime to Montreal on Thursday.

The Maple Leafs led 3-2 on Matt Stajan's second-power play goal midway through the third period, but the Canadiens tied the game with 4:10 remaining.

"I think we were the better team tonight, and fell short," defenseman Mike Komisarek said. "We didn't get two points. Next time, we'll find a way to win and get the two points."

Komisarek was among Toronto's top acquisitions in the offseason, signing a five-year deal worth $22.5 million. The All-Star was very assertive in the opener, but that also cost his new team. Facing his former club, Komisarek had a fighting major against the Canadiens and took five minor penalties - the last of which set up the power play on which Montreal scored the tying goal.

Still, Leafs coach Ron Wilson thought Komisarek set a good example for his teammates.

"Mike answered the bell, and he'll continue to do so," Wilson said. "We need more of our defensemen to respond as aggressively and quickly as Mike did."

Washington won the first two meetings between the teams last season but Toronto won the last two, including a 3-2 victory in the final matchup as Ovechkin was stopped on the Capitals' final shootout attempt.

Only the second game of the season, but the Leafs need a win here. Caps had a decent season opener vs the Bruins and a win against them after that damn loss to Montreal should help.

Need a win if they want to get to .500, maybe.

Lets not start with that yet..we might all be thinking it (heck, I think it every game of the season) but to hear it out there in the open is just silly at this point.

Always fun to play against high skill teams like the caps, I expect a high tempo, back and forth game, I really think Stalberg will thrive under this style.

Just a note - TSN quoted Finger as saying that he'll likely be paired with White.

Bubbles shakes his head at me too.

The Leafs always need a win. Obviously they won't always win, but it's nice to see. I just think a win on the first Saturday night game of the year against a strong team like the Caps would be good, that's all. Especially since the Leafs should have won last night, in my opinion.

It's not as if the season is over if they lose, I wasn't trying to imply that.

Always fun watching the Caps play. Outcome will rely on our defense as it will all season. Defense was horrible for the opener.

Very nice GDT! thanks!

I'm not sure about others, but I would prefer it if we can have our GDT earlier this season rather the just before the game. That way it's easier to talk about the upcoming game, and continue on when the game does get going.

That being said, cannot wait to see Ovechkin play this game. It's going to be tough and huge challange for the Leafs to contain him this early in the season. A tough way for the D to rebound from the last game! :p

Nice GDT Kareem!

well done my friend. I'm lovin' that Exelby is sitting and Finger is back. Makes a D a bit faster and harder to play against.

I think they're both really weak on the back end TBH, I'm personally looking forward to the return of MVR, he's a very solid all around d-man.

Agree. MVR seems to go all out whenever he plays, always enjoy watching him play (which isn't often)

I would like to see the final pairing as White and MVR, eventually.

XLB worries me too much. A bonehead that coughs up the puck and takes dumb penalties is not good especially against the caps. Anways Go Leafs Go.

7-1 caps...Hopefully Im wrong but I have a feeling toskaLOL will HAVE A BREAKDOWN and will be pulled after 1st period...7-0 after first because of softies from TOSKALOL...I really hope the leafs fight hard and get a huge victory in this one .. that'll definitely boost there confidence going into the next game. PLEASE TOSKALAFF DONT SCREW UP.

Things I'm hoping for this game.

1: The defense shapes up 100 percent, because they all [but Kaberle] sucked yesterday. I honestly think it was opening night jitters (one should hope).

2: Toskala, as decent as he was, needs to step it up and not be the "One Goal a Game" Goaltender. As much as the defense sucked two of those goals he needed to have and we would have had 2 points. If he had stopped one, totally different game.

3: More quality shots. It is well and good to have 45 shots on goal, but if they are at the chest of the goaltender, very rare to get the rebound. just shoot, and rush the net.

4: More passing, less puck hogging. You know who you are, GRABO and BLAKE.

5: Speaking of Blake - for God sakes, please, stop acting as if you wanted to be on Battle of the Blades with that spin and shoot thinger. Just... pass it normally.

6: Less turnovers

That's about it

And this is one really nice GDT, and I agree - it's nice to talk about it a day or two earlier, and then go into depth on game day

I hope we win obviously but i wont be made if we get slaughtered enough to never see Toskala in net again.

Go Leafs
