Why not Chelios?

Hes doing anything to play one more year in the NHL. I think hed be happy getting a few games here and there and at 47 hes still better defensively then MAB.

If Chelios is willing to play for cheap not play a ton of minutes, then he's the guy at this point. Semenov's wife is out of her mind, and Chelios wants to play, and according to Roenick, wanted to play here.

Lukowich cleared waivers recently, I guess we wouldn't have to move much for him but I'm not sure on his cap hit.

Wonder if Torts' would prefer to dress 11 and 7 some nights given his relative non-use of 4th line and concerns over giving too much, too soon to young defensemen. If so this might become a sooner than later issue.

Interesting thought - hadn't considered that.

But if so, who are the forwards who sit? Boyle and Voros?

I can think of four reasons why we want a 7th Dman:

1 As a replacement in case there is an injury.

2 To occasionally play a game so that Del Zotto & Gilroy don't burn out during the long year.

3 To keep all the Dman on their toes, playing their best or else they'll be benched.

4 As a body during practice and someone else to learn from.

IMO, Chelios is by far the best choice available for #4, and he can serve the other purposes as well. However, there is a big risk - heaven forbid there is a long term injury (especially to Roszival, Redden, Staal or Girardi) - I'm not confident that Chelios can step in for a long stint and play substantial minutes. Semenov wasn't a top 4 guy, but he could in a pinch play 40 straight games as your number 6. I'm not confident in Chelios to say the same.

It's high risk, but if a decent guy like Seminov can't be found, I think you can occasionally call up Potter / Sauer / Sanguinetti as needed or for short term injuries. If there is a long term injury, you might be forced to make a trade from a vulnerable situation.

Chelios would probably be a great fit.

He can play the mentor role for Del Zotto and Gilroy.

Even though he would barely get any ice time.

If he were OK with basically never playing and getting paid league minimum.

I was thinking of Lukowich as well. Tortorella coached him in Tampa. Is Rhett Warrener still around?

Can't blame $ather for this. Semenov turning down the offer was completely unexpected, I mean, who in their right mind would turn down a contract if he's on a camp tryout?

I say patch the #7D with Potter, Sauer or Sanguinetti with a callup whenever neccessary (fatigue, injury, etc). Bring up whoever has the hottest form and deserves it most.

We do have a very thin defensive lineup though. 1-2 injuries and we will look very weak. Imagine having 4(!) rookies on defense.

It would be an interesting option. I don't think he was nowhere as bad as some of the bashers on this board considered him. A couple of penalties too many, that's all.

Honestly it makes sense. He has been their before and would come cheap knowing he's the 7th. He should just be happy to have a NHL contract

As per Zipay Torts made it clear they want a veteran guy

"Obviously, we'd like to try to get some sort of veteran who can help out. You can't force-feed that position continually, as young as we are right now. That's why it's taking some time, we want to find the right guy that understands that role while we get to continue to develop our young guys along the way."

So i do not think a call up will happen unless there is an injury.

Trade is the only option at this point in time, but we've got not so much to offer.
