Betts/Parent could return this weekend (update, post #172)

http://www.csnphilly.com/pages/landi...316&feedID=704

Quote:
Blair Betts, their best penalty killer, a guy they brought into camp without a contract and kept him around to sign, sustained a dislocated right shoulder late in regulation killing a penalty.

“We’ll know more tomorrow, but it will be a minimum of four weeks,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. Betts also will undergo an MRI.

Betts fell awkwardly onto his own stick during that penalty kill.

He wasn’t the only casualty.

Rookie winger James van Riemsdyk had his “bell rung,” Holmgren said, after being driven into the corner boards by Milan Jurcina midway into the game. JVR played just two shifts in the third period.

Although he passed a baseline concussion test between periods, he will also be re-evaluated.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Holmgren said of JVR.

With our previous problems with concussions, I'd set a time table for JVR to get back and then double it, cannot take risks here.

An article from ASF:
Quote:

Blair Betts' injury is a big one. Don't be fooled by the fact that he is a minimum salary player on the fourth line. He's the best faceoff guy on the team. He's one of the best penalty killers. A dislocated shoulder is a tricky injury. Paul Holmgren said "at least" four weeks. If we see Betts before Thanksgiving, I'll be impressed.

James van Riemsdyk's situation is a bit more cloudy, but then again, aren't they always when it comes to head injuries and the Flyers? He's day-to-day. He'll be re-evaluated. Homer is saying "bell rung." I'm saying uh-oh. My biggest problem though isn't the veil of secrecy - it is, after all, just a precaution - but rather, the macho test the Flyers seem to try with all of their young players after injuries.

THey sent van Riemsdyk back out on the ice at the start of the third period. He took two shifts and realy didn't feel right. If he had his "bell rung" why the hell put him out there at all? Just keep him in the locker room. It's the third game of the season for Pete's sake.

That is something the team will have to answer. Guaranteed it will be asked tomorrow.

if JVR doesnt have a concussion count me in on the let him sit for awhile regardless camp.
No need to mess around. Sit him the next 2 games at the very least.

I agree that JVR should sit, and I also don't want Betts hurrying back. We can handle injuries now. We can't handle injuries in the spring. There's a pattern of guys getting hurting, coming back, and getting hurt again. Gagne, Briere, etc.

Wow talk about hyperbole in those articles. Betts is solid but he's not our "best penalty killer" (that'd be, I dunno, Richie or Kimmo or Pronger) and even though he's good at faceoffs, Richards has looked very capable in the last couple games and actually had a better faceoff percentage through the first 3 games. We have more than enough guys to survive on the PK, and while I am unhappy about this injury, it is nothing to lose sleep over.

Richie was at 9/13 at some point on faceoffs. Didn't see what he finished off at but he was doing a good job on the dot, at least for a while.

Definitely sucks Blair got hurt but we knew injuries were coming. Also, glad this is the beginning of the year and not the end of it. He'll have plenty of time to heal.

In all seriousness, thankfully Betts' injury is a dislocation is a huge relief...assuming the MRI doesn't prove that it's seperated.

Agreed...definitely not a good thing, but it could have been a LOT worse.

asham needs his play time. if JVR is 100% fine, go for it and let him play. i'd probably err on the side of caution and give him a game or two to get back to tip top.

I didn't see the hit, does anyone have a youtube by rare chance?

If not, could someone briefly explain what happened with the hit to JVR?

If JVR is 99,9%.. no need to hurry really, sit him for a game and unleash Cote for the next game (Pens at home).

Bottom six for next game:
Asham-Giroux-Lappy
Carcillo-Powe-Cote

And after that:
JVR-Giroux-Asham
Carcillo-Powe-Lappy

sup?

Sit JVR tomorrow regardless. Take no risks in such a high-emotion game.

Obviously very upset about Betts and JVR injuries.

What people do not realize is that while Betts was PKing, Mike Richards is over a PPG player and Carter (Jeff did not look very good) is a PPG player.

Betts is replaceable but he is important. Betts also 2nd best faceoff player on our team.

I'm just pissed because I'm going to the game Thursday and I wanted to see JVR play. Now that most likely won't happen. And if he's not going to play, I was hoping they'd call up Maroon and give him a shot. I don't care about stinking Asham and Cote.

Maybe we can put a call into Jimmy Dowd to see if he can come back to fill in for Betts.
