Kevin Smith Making a Hockey Movie

This brought a huge smile to my face as I've loved this song since the first time I heard it....
When acclaimed filmmaker Kevin Smith was left in a haze following disappointing box office results for his most recent movie, he said what helped him through his "period of rebuilding" was going back to something he loved.

That something was hockey.

The award-winning writer, director, producer and actor of such cult hits like "Clerks," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma" and "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" has decided his next project will be a hockey movie.

The film will be based on the Warren Zevon song "Hit Somebody," which tells the story of Buddy, an enforcer with no offensive skills, but who still holds fast to the dream of someday scoring just one goal in a game.
The whole article can be found here: Kevin Smith Turns his Camera on the Love of Hockey.

I'm not sure how active Mitch Albom is going to be in the script but he did help pen the song for Warren Zevon and Kevin has been in contact with Mitch about his vision.

In case you haven't heard the song...

Awesome!

Not sure if you read the full article but Kevin Smith has an ending I never really thought of when listening to the song over the last few years. Depending on how he approaches this, it could move him away from locker-room humor and more into drama. I can't wait.

No doubt about it, much like most movies...I tend to doubt it will be as good as what it was based on. Most movies based off of books or any other media suck. However, I did like Clerks. If Kevin goes outside of his comfort zone I could see this being his version of Robin Williams doing Dead Poets Society. Given he already stated that Buddy will die at the end, there will be no shock value...he has to tell a good story to get us to that point in time now. It very well may suck...but I for one would love to see Lappy penned in as Buddy. I could probably watch a 90 minute movie that sucked if he was the star.

I'm a fan of him, but I'd like to see this like more of his older material.
I'm excited for it anyway.

Good! I'm not the only one.

I'm actually not a Kevin Smith fan even though I feel like I should be. Didn't care much for any of his movies with the two very big exceptions being the film listed above and Mallrats. Everything else I've seen of his is just...meh.

I'm a big-time snob when it comes to hockey movies. More often than not they just don't get it right. I can't stand any of those abominable Mighty Ducks movies, and films like Youngblood just don't work. I'm also not as big a fan of Mystery, Alaska as most people I know are. Movies like Sudden Death and The Love Guru probably don't count (thankfully I've never seen either).

Two hockey movies I do like are Miracle and of course, the classic, Slap Shot.

Well there's really only so much you can get out of hockey movies when the majority of American industry knows so very little about it. There's twice as many basketball movies than hockey movies. So unless you're a hardcore hockey fan, there's not many people who are going to care how 'right' it is.
However, I do agree with most of what you're getting at, but I don't mind, I can let it slide personally.

Wouldn't really require much acting huh?

Who would you like to see play Buddy? I'm thinking Kevin might be crazy enough to get an ex-NHL grinder to play the role regardless of acting ability. I'd love to see either Podes or Lappy if that's the case.
