Everyone played over 26 minutes, except for O'Brien, who was stuck in the mid teens, his usual.

If that's not indicative of Vigneault's opinion of his play, I don't know what is. It'll be interesting to see whether he or Rome get more ice time.

Well I think it's fairly common knowledge at this point O'Brien is a good bottom pairing guy who really struggles if he gets up over the 18 minute per night mark. Now the question is: does his ice-time plus intangibles justify the sort of salary he's getting?

So how are the defensive pairing's going to look like for next game?

Mitchell - Bieksa
Edler - Ehrhoff
O'Brien - Rome

That would be my best guess.

Depending on how long Salo's injury is i would call up Lukowich if long term.

I suspect he would be grabbed on recall waivers and that would leave the Canucks on the hook for half of his salary under the cap for the rest of the year.

Damn, So many of our players going down. Next it'll be Luongo.

This is going to be a very tough 4 weeks for the Canucks. 2 lines, 1 shutdown Dman, and the right hand won't know what the left hand is doing.

We need some ambidextrous players perhaps?

Won't matter alot in the short-term if Luongo plays to the level he's clearly capable of being at (or doesn't).

Daniel is left handed and Henrik is right handed as I recall. So now Henrik won't know what the left hand is doing.

Pretty much the #1 reason why I hope Salo's contract is not extended. While I appreciate what Salo can bring when he's on the ice, his time spent on the IR makes him always a questionable commodity.

Unless he take a serious paycut and accepts not having a NTC you won't see Salo back. We still get to see him through next season and by then I expect him to either retire or only be offered 1 year deals given his history. Being this injury-proned he should probably be thinking about how he wants to live his post hockey life: walking or a wheel chair.

38th injury

Sami Salo - the Land Rover (at least he is not a Fiat or Yugo) -
Quote:
Salo suffers yet another breakdown

Knee this time: Almost-always-banged-up blueliner faces 38th injury of career
By Gordon McIntyre, The Province October 11, 2009

Sami Salo’s like a 1996 Land Rover: He looks imposing and gets the job done — when he’s not breaking down.

But like a road-worn English SUV, something can go wonky at any time and when it does, it’s costly and takes time to fix.
...
Until he hurt his knee, Salo was playing 21:20 a game; only Calgary’s Jay Bouwmeester gets more ice time this young season.

“Sami’s a great player and every time he’s in our lineup, just look at the stats,” coach Alain Vigneault said Sunday. “Our team wins a lot more games than it loses.”

That’s true — and it’s what Vigneault said during the playoffs, and last January and last November and all the other times Salo has missed significant stretches.

That $3.5-million cap hit breaks down to about $60,000 per actual game played.

A healthy player making that much per game would earn almost $5 million a season.

And that’s the situation the Canucks are stuck with: Paying Salo on a games-played basis like he’s Mike Green, but getting his services only three-quarters of the time.

Salo came at a bargain, but his maintenance costs are high.

Ehrhoff is particularly looking like a monster as he has yet to finish a game in the minus (for those worrying about his +/- on the Sharks). And has had his ice-time increased each of the last three games. Looks like the coaching staff likes him.
Even more impressive is the fact Ehrhoff has been on the ice for only 1 goal against so far this year and it came on the PK. A quick break down of all our defensemen:

GAOI:

Ehrhoff: 0 ES, 0 PP, 1 SH
O’brien: 0 ES, 0 PP, 2 SH
Mitchell: 3 ES, 0 PP, 2 SH
Bieksa: 2 ES, 1 PP, 3 SH
Edler: 4 ES, 0 PP, 2 SH
Salo: 5 ES, 0 PP, 2 SH

GFOI

Ehrhoff: 2 ES, 2 PP, 0 SH
O’brien: 2 ES, 0 PP, 0 SH
Mitchell: 4 ES, 0 PP, 0 SH
Bieksa: 3 ES, 3 PP, 0 SH
Edler: 2 ES, 2 PP, 0 SH
Salo: 2 ES, 3 PP, 0 SH

Iain MacIntyre is speculating a torn knee ligament with Salo gone for 4 weeks.
Quote:
The Canucks were still waiting late Monday for results from a MRI test on the defenceman’s right knee, which suffered ligament damage on Salo’s third shift in Sunday’s 4-3 shootout win against the Dallas Stars.

It was Vancouver’s fifth game of the National Hockey League season, so Sami was due. And given the amount of pain the 35-year-old Finn was in and how feebly he hobbled through one brief shift after the injury, the over/under for the suspected MCL tear should be about four weeks.
He sees the possible replacements as follows:
Quote:
Extra defenceman Aaron Rome will take Salo’s lineup spot Friday in Calgary, although the Canucks will likely call up a defenceman from the minors. Lawrence Nycholat suffered a separated shoulder with the Manitoba Moose, so the top recall candidates are Michael Funk and Evan Oberg.
http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/h...286/story.html

It is tough to replace Salo as we saw last year. The Canucks were 9-10-3 last season during Salo’s four separate lineup absences, and 36-17-7 when he played. Couple that with the loss of one half of the Sedin duo and......

Rick Bowness seems to think the team will pull together:

“You take two key guys out and everyone knows the margin for error gets a lot slimmer,” assistant coach Rick Bowness said. “So that gets everyone’s attention. Everyone becomes more responsible with and without the puck.

“It’s always a team game. But when you lose two key guys — forward and defence — it becomes even more of a team game.”

With Salo being a UFA this summer it will be interesting to see how Gillis handles this situation. Salo is not like Gaborik who had a chronic problem that kept re-surfacing. Salo's body is just not built for a contact sport. Each time it's a different injury to a different part of the body. But he is still a very good defenseman that other teams would want. GM's will probably want some sort of games played bonus with a lower salary. Salo's also 35 but I don't really see him retiring yet unless he's had enough with the injuries.

Salo is not a free agent until after the 2010-11 season.

Woops, ended up looking at Mitchell's number. That's what I get for being groggy, can't even follow a straight line across my screen

Just save my post for 1 year from now. Good chance Salo's hurt then too so same thing

Is that correct? I'd never heard that before.

They both shoot left, which would indicate that they're both right-handed, but I guess that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.

Salo is out 4-6 weeks and no D-man will be recalled from the Moose:
