Tortorella says Grachev a Ranger soon

Quote:
Evgeny Grachev, who has a goal and two assists in four games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, might be in New York early in 2010. "I think he will be a part of this club before the year's over," Rangers coach John Tortorella said before last night's game.

I'm not sure where he would fit.

Many things will happen before the year is over. Lets take things day to day. Playing in the A is not going to hurt Grachev's development.

Grachev is not a fighter at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure his next fight will be his first, unless you count that one against that bully in 3rd grade.

Grachev will be a nice replacement for Lisin assuming Evgeny gets some seasoning and is ready by early 2010.

And before crossbar goes ballistic again, no, Lisin hasnt been terrible, but he hasnt been anything close to a difference maker either (like Anisimov is starting to be).

We have plenty of depth this year with Kotalik on the 4th line now. I personally think we should give Grachev a season in the AHL and only get a limited call-up due to injuries. No need to rush him.

Dont expect a walk in the park when it comes injuries this season. Not with the style this team is playing.

If 1 top 9 player goes down, we may be able to deal with it. If 2 go down, the organization has basically no choice but to bring Grachev up.

Who'd move to RW to make room for Grachev?

Lisin hasn't produced much on the scoring sheet, but to me at least he's been reasonably helpful so far. Virtually non-existent away from the puck, but that was a known non-quality going into the year. He's made some nice breakout passes, including springing Dubinsky for a goal a few games ago. And his speed can be useful, especially if he starts putting together a 2way game.

Still, I'm just patiently waiting for Grachev to get ready.

Brashear has been suspended, what, twice in his career? Unless a "casuality suspension" is something completely different...

And by annual you mean two in 18 professional seasons, right?

I'm thinking this was more of a comment designed to motivate Grachev in the AHL?

I don't realistically see how Tortorella could envision room for Grachev when we already have an extra top 3 line forward to finagle with... He certainly cannot predict injuries or trades so his comment doesn't really make sense in any other regard other than to give some hope/motivation to Grachev that he has something to play for and work towards this season.

I don't see any rush in bringing him up with the way that the team is playing. Where would he play and who sits?

If the lines are:

Prospal-Dubie-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Callahan
Avery-Anisimov-Lisin
Brashear-Boyle-Kotalik

Who's place does he take? Lisin's? But why banish Kotalik to 4th line duty when he's tied for second on the team in scoring with 3 goals?

Most likely it will be as an injury replacement at some point during the year. Although Brash doesn't have to play 82 games a year. Grachev-Boyle-Kotalik gives four lines that can put the puck in the net. Not saying it's likely but it's not out of the realm of possibilities.

I think it's more that he thinks Grachev is close to being NHL ready and will be ready before the season is done. Whether or not he ends up on the Rangers will be dictated by injuries and what happens on the trade deadline

But Tortorella is mostly playing 2 lines right now... 3rd line has seen minimal ice time.... Only 3 shifts in last night's game during the 2nd period according to Brooks....

There's no way they bring Grachev up to try and make a scoring line out of the 4th line that isn't going to play much anyway.... I mean no way they take him out of Hartford skating 18-22 minutes a night and bring him up to the NHL to skate 6-8 minutes a night on the 4th line....

Trades or injuries are the only way it would happen....

That's right now. We don't know how the players will hold up playing this style for 82 games. He very well may have to become more reliant upon his bottom 6.

I'm curious to know what the context of Tortorella's comment was. What question was he answering?

other than a call up for injury replacement i think this comment means one of two things:

1. hes trying to keep the fire lit under the ***** of the young players (Lisin or AA perhaps) by letting them know there's someone he feels is NHL ready nipping at their heels

2. He's talking about Grachev finishing the season in the NHL after the trade deadline if we're sellers rather than buyers this year

What like if the top 6 starts to look fatigued/tired?

I think initially he didn't have much confidence in that 3rd line but they are started to produce scoring chances and I could envision him utilizing them more moving forward if they continue to do so....

he is for sure in next year full time but yea I see him getting called up as soon as anyone goes down. Voros should never see a shift again

Grachev and Anisimov could make a good combo. Throw Lisin in their too. Makes ya think about Cherapanov and what if all the time

The third line will come together soon. Arty is gaining confidence, Avery is back and Lisin is learning.

But yes, I was saying the Top 6 may start to wear down over the course of the season and he may have to divide the ice time up a little more.
