Its a good offer but we really don't need a guy like Cole IMO. How about Lars Eller instead?

That's like me telling you that I don't really need a Wendy's junior bacon cheeseburger, but I'd really prefer 12 oz. five star steak.

No. Eller is not going to be dealt. Not for Volchenkov.
How do you NOT need a guy like Cole?
If you are going to deal Volchenkov, you are going to want to have another hard hitting, two-way defensemen in your system.
Cole is a year away and he'd crack your roster next year for sure.

So no, no to Eller.

If Ottawa trades Volchenkov. It better be for a forward prospect and not a d-prospect. We have Campoli,Lee,Picard, karlsson,Cowen,Wiercioch all below 25..Unless its Volchenknov + for a number 1 d-man. I want a forward.

Cole + Crombeen + 1st

for

Volchenkov + 3rd

would be a great deal for the Sens, I'd jump on that in a second. Just use the 1st for a forward.

Karlsson - Cowen
Cole - Wiercioch
Lee - Phillips

the guy is going to get re-signed. loves ottawa, he has a house in carp(10 minutes away from the rink) and he has his roots firmly planted there. if he was to be traded it would be for a good top 6 forward and a 1st. thats the minimum murray would accept so save your breath.

The Blues have plenty of forward prospects they could move. But Eller isn't moving right now.

Aaron Palushaj, Brett Sonne, or Philip McRae.

Palushaj and McRae.
Sonne is a projected third line bad ass who's going to score.

After looking at OTT's payroll and assuming a salary cap of around $55M, I don't see how Murray will be able to afford a Volchenkov re-signing next summer without significant roster moves -- for example:
a) Fisher traded, or
b) Kelly traded (without any returning salary), and Cheechoo bought out.

Or am I missing something?

Yeah we would have to ship out one of our bigger contracts, not Fisher however..

Kelly and Ruutu might very well be on the shortlist next summer. Other than that we'll have plenty of room to sign Volchenkov. Unless, of course, he's asking way over his head.

If we want Volchenkov, we'll have Kuba, Phillips, Volchie, Karlsson already signed. One or two (if Cowen makes the team) of Carkner, Campoli, Lee, Picard is retained. Use the rest of the money to retain Volchenkov.

Volchie is already making 2.5million so making a million in extra cap space won't be too difficult.

lol at folks actually bringing John Carlson into this discussion.

He's virtually one step below 'untouchable,' (much like the 'Young Guns') to the organization, especially considering how mediocre the defense has been.

it would be a roster player + pick/prospect

there is no way in hell we only get a prospect + a pick

ppl WAYYY overvalue prospects and picks on these boards, especially since their 1st wont be that great....

He is not available. Ottawa will re-sign him.

Not sure on that, if we are trading him as a rental, his value for roster players is lower than for Picks/prospects as giving up a roster player hurts the team going forward THIS YEAR (when their rental is in action) over picks/prospects which don't hurt the team THIS year. The guy talking about Laich has it half right, Washington very well might not trade Laich for Volchenkov, but Volchenkov has a much higher value in terms of picks/propsects than Laich.

Having said that, Volchenkov would be a VERY hot property at the trade deadline, especially in the Eastern Conference with all the high powered offensive stars that he is perfect for. Washington, as a team with one of those stars and lacking in defensive defenseman as it is, would be a prime suitor of Volchenkov.

I'd respond by "people WAY overvalue UFA rentals". How many guys moved for 1st round DP's the last couple of trade deadlines? Outside of Colby Armstrong in the Hossa deal, how many rentals return contributing roster players back?

I'm a big AV fan, but just wondering how he's get more trade value than pretty much EVERY UFA rental since the lock-out? I agree that it's HIGHLY likely that he re-signs w/ OTT, but if he hasn't by the deadline, his value isn't any higher than other trade deadline rental.
