Pretty much anything makes more sense than Mair in the top six.

I'll be interested to see how Gerbe fits in on the team now that everyone seems to be committed to the system, and realizes they're fighting for their spot every night. I've been underwhelmed so far with what I've seen, but getting thrown into the middle of a well-oiled machine might be just what he needs to shine.

Regardless - I'm really not worried about Vanek missing a few weeks, especially if it's just ribs and not wrist/shoulder/etc. Our bottom six has been the engine driving our success to this point, and as long as they continue working hard, they should be able to carry the top six for awhile.

Quote:
Buffalo, NY (WGR550) -- Thomas Vanek was not on the ice at today's Sabre practice after suffering an upper-body injury in the teams' 6-2 win over Detroit Tuesday night. After the game, Head Coach Lindy Ruff said that Vanek could miss weeks. After today's practice, Ruff said that the injury isn't as bad as first feared and wouldn't rule Vanek out of the next week of hockey. Ruff said the forward is feeling better today after undergoing several tests since the injury first occurred.
very nice

He could also be looking at what Mair can do for that line besides providing offense. His aggressive forecheck and ability to hit could open space up for Roy and Stafford much as May did when he played with LaFontaine and Mogilny.

Exactly. That would not be a bad thing.

Of course, as another poster noted, Gerbe may have been called up and not able to arrive to practice in time. Something about "you must be at least this tall ===> for this ride" sign at the airport...

Mair needs the work to improve his conditioning. When Mair was cleared, Ruff mentioned that with missing all of camp/preseason, that he wasn't close to game shape.

Adam Mair skated in Vanek's spot on the wing with Derek Roy and Drew Stafford. The rest of the lines remain the same as last night. Dan Paille and Nathan Paetsch are the extra forwards as well. Ruff added that any of the three players could take Vanek's left wing spot on the team's top line.
I think Mair, Paille or Paestch in that spot makes the most sense.

It keeps the other 3 lines intact.

Its all about working hard and pressuring the puck. If they play as well defensively as they have been they will be fine.

Gerbe isn't coming up nor should he be

Quote:
Lindy said Vanek's status depends on how the forward feels each day. He also said Nathan Gerbe is not going to be called up to fill the spot, at this point. Ruff also said does not want to disrupt the make-up of any of the other three lines right now.

I'd sit Vanek out this weekend just incase, regardless if he says he can go or not. The last thing we need to do is rush him back and make things worse.

If Lindy doesn't want to juggle the lines, he's gotta go with Paille in TV's spot over Mair. If he doesn't Paille must really be on the outs with Lindy.

Interesting article from Lebrun on that.

And the NHL Board thread mysteriously edited.... Won't play again in '09, my ass.

I agree. But I get the feeling that Lindy is going to juggle the lines rather than play Paille.

If it's only for a couple games honestly I'd say throw Paetsch up in Vanek's spot. As far as I've seen he's always played better as a forward than a defenseman anyways.

Fixed. You have to admit that line is intriguing. And as much as I dont want any lines shuffled, I want Paille in the top 6 or even on ice much less. These lines look good while Vanek is gone, and it shouldnt be more than a few games I guess now.

Per Gleason's chat today, Vanek was on the ice practicing today. Good sign for the weekend games.

Thats an AWESOME sign. Maybe it was just a stinger, or a bruise that he can deal with?

Or, he circled the earth at light speed, went back in time before the injury, and avoided the contact on the ice.

Or, he stopped the earth from rotating while the injury healed fully, and then released the earth to spin again. We are all technically actually several weeks older.

As one of our Austrian Sabre fans said in this thread, those Austrians are fast healers, that is how they do it.
