That article was a massive pile of stupidity...to me he clearly started with the obvious "best financial interest for the league" and figured out how to justify the series without just relying on the pure economics. To argue that a series involving two massive payrolls, and the two big steroid stories of the year would restore "purity" to the game is one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
Forbes TOP 10 Most Valuable MLB teams (04/2009)

1. New York Yankees
2. New York Mets
3. Boston Red Sox
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
5. Chicago Cubs
6. Los Angeles Angels
7. Philadelphia Phillies
8. St Louis Cardinals
9. San Francisco Giants
10. Chicago White Sox

The Phillies market is quite large also, they are the largest single market team in all of baseball. Much of Delaware, Eastern PA, and South Jersey watch the Games.

The real reason last years WS was a failure ratings wise was Tampa.

If the Phils play NYY, it will be a success.

The teams and organizations ripe with these steroid users/cheaters hail from California (San Fran), NY and Boston among others.

The Yankees themselves are the pinnacle of the easy way out, able to always restock with superstars because they can spend $2 billion in a 10 year period on their players, where teams like Florida are making it on youth and talent spending $40 mill a year before losing their stars to teams like Boston and Detroit.

$2 bill in salary in 10 years. 2 BILLION!

If you want everything that is wrong with baseball, look no further then New York, where the players play for the name on the back, and not the logo on the front.
Don't really think the NYT explicitly represents NY in that sense...in fact, it's pretty much a worthless source for anything related to sports -- which is the larger issue. A legit sports source would almost certainly never publish that piece.

That game was epic.

Nothing quite like bringing the childish bitterness out of the opposing sports writers:

Nowhere in America are people more angry than those living here. During Game 3 they had their humorless furry mascot put on boxing gloves and take on someone who was supposed to be an L.A. fan, sunglasses, cellphone and all.

The furry mascot punched him out, much to the delight of the folks here who love a dash of violence with their sports entertainment.

During Game 4 the furry mascot took a small Dodgers blue helmet, placed it on the ground and then pulverized it, much to the delight of the locals. Same tired skits, by the way, they employed a year ago.

But this is considered entertainment here, the only bright spot if they draw the Yankees now, getting a look in the mirror at fans who might remind them of themselves.
I like the turn from bashing the dodgers into classic Philly fan bashing. Also he doesn't like the Phantatic? Who the **** doesn't like the Phanatic?

seriously?

Not debating that, Philly is a very good market for MLB. However, Dodgers >> Phillies.

You'll note that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim got the Yankees bumped to the afternoon game (remember when we were *****ing about this in the LDS?). Dodgers OWN LA.

It's a big drop from LA to Philly. 12.8M metro to 5.8M metro.

True, but LA also has 2 teams in the playoffs this year.

I find the Phanatic annoying/boring, but obviously his target audience is kids...and it's simply classic gag humor. To act like that stuff is confined to Philly and the East coast is absurd.

I mean, really, OMG he blew up a batting helmet?

Yes, but that's the point. No one cares about the Angels (which is why they rebranded themselves in an effort to suck in LA fans a bit more) and the Dodgers do have a pretty significant following. That's a historic franchise that's had a lot of success.

'Same tied skits' they've employed for...years and years. When I went to Phillies games as a kid, I saw the same stuff.

The Phantic is fun, whatever.

People act like other teams don't boo or something. Here's a thought, go **** yourself and actually go to some games on the West Coast. Those guys aren't friendly either.

Difference is the Dodger fans would have to still be at the game to boo.

CWS fans ran on the field and beat up the opposing team's 1st base coach...yet Philly is the bad group? The Philly fans are awful meme is just idiotic in how it displays us as some outlier group.

Even the Domi incident was escalated BY DOMI, and the only reason the dude ended up in the penalty box was because the glass gave way.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Dodger fans were so awesome, why do they sell their playoff tickets for less then a third what people in Philly pay to see these games?

That's outrageous. I don't care how many people are in LA, they still have $50 playoff tickets that they have trouble moving, so **** them.

Stubhub for the Phillies has standing room tickets going for over $150.

BEAT LA

Someone needs to point out to that writer that the ultimate mascot, and the one that all other mascots are compared to, originated in California. But then again, I love the Phanatic. Toronto's mascots could learn a thing or twelve.

I haven't watched 2 full baseball games in the past 15 years, but last night's game was a great game to watch. Exciting as hell in the 8th and 9th.

Enjoy guys - looks like it's gonna be a great ride again this year.

Doesn't matter IMO, there's no way Rivera has been spitballing for 15 years and nobody's noticed, Angels fans making much ado about nothing.
