If you look at the guts, it shouldn't be a suprise:

Nowhere near the level of protection the certifying agencies are looking for.

Gretzky wore the JOFA until the end of his career. Was the rule not in place then?

Wow, those helmets are hilarious inside. They might as well be halloween toy helmets. Helmets just for looks?

Remember players didn't even wear helmets before and i'd say only in the last 20-25 years has gear in general really progressed.

Helmet rule stuff has been grandfathered in.

And they were actually made for broomball IIRC.

This Jofa was the one Gretzky, Kurri, McSorely and Dale Hunter wore. Jagr, Selanne, and Lemeiux wore the the 366 model.

Why does he wear it?

Because he is Jaromir Jagr and he can do what he pleases.

Because they offer roughly the same amount of protection to your skull as a sheet of paper towel.

For real, you're just asking for a coma when you're wearing one of those. But at least you'll look cool as **** while they load you into the ambulance.

reminds me of those plastic soup bowls that you see Harley Davidson riders wearing. just enough to follow the law, but you might as well be wearing nothing if you get in a crash

If you have a big head or lots of hair, the 366 is for you. That may be why...

You're safe to take it off now. He's gone.

Also, nobody cared what helmet Gretzky wore. It didn't matter because he didn't get hit.
