Pretty much the same quotes from before the season started, but at least he hasn't changed his opinion...

Quote:
When asked about how the Thrashers were cautiously optimistic that he would soon sign a contract extension, the superstar winger answered: "Hopefully. I like it here. And I think they did a lot of good things during the offseason to sign some guys and I feel it's the best team we've ever had. They took some good steps. So we'll see. My agent is talking to them. I just want to focus on hockey."

Custance and Dub also chime in...

Quote:
Atlanta general manager Don Waddell said he and Kovalchuk's agent, Jay Grossman, have had a lot of positive contract talks in the last week.

"Every sign continues to point toward getting something done," Waddell told Sporting News.

the Pens essentially traded 3 1st rounders (Armstrong, Esposito & our #1 pick) for Hossa....

As an Avs fan, no idea if it's enough, but we have cap room and need a guy like Kovalchuk(who doesn't?) to compliment Duchene well.

Wojtek Wolski
John-Michael Liles
Stoa/Gaunce/any 1 of our top prospects
2010 1st round pick
2011 1st round pick

Atlanta get a top 6, young forward. They get a PP quarter-back, good age to lead the backline. 2 first round picks, and whichever one of our top non-NHL prospects they'd want... Stoa, Gaunce, Elliott, whoever.

No idea if it's enough. We have the money to sign him long-term, too.

Kovy's only leverage is the threat of Medvedev's team signing him for zillions of tax free dollars. He might sign a four year deal, and then play in Russia for the 2013-2014 Olympic season and then return. Honestly, that's what I'd do if I was him.

if atlanta trades kovy they go from having one of the best offensive top 9 to being barely above average

they'd be looking for a good forward that can either play on the top line or take over for kozlov as he would be bumped to the top line. the only defense they would need is a good shutdown d-man that can skate well. no powerplay qb's, we've already got a roster full of them not counting kovy and that's not including some very good offensive d prospects that are still a year or two away from the nhl.

Even assuming he signs that is a massive, massive package.

Good young 2nd line wing, borderline top pairing d-man, 2 1st round picks, and any prospect (including Shatty?). Thats worth two or three times what they got for Hossa, so you have to be talking about the inclusion of a long term deal right?

I also agree, there aren't many better players in the league for Duchene than Kovalchuk.

I sincerely hope he doesn't head to the KHL. He's one of my favorite players to watch in the league.

Don Waddell was on the FAN590 the other day and said that both the Thrashers and Kovalchuk do not want a 10-15 year deal.

He said that Kovalchuk wants a contract that has the same face value each season.

kovalchuk is married...and has two kids with a third on the way...i highly doubt the attractiveness of local girls is going to be the deciding factor...

Rangers were very "LUCKY" to move Gomez....but as in any class of 30 being high school, sports teams, work place, there's always a moron in the bunch..... (Gainey)

seriously....does anyone here think that Kovy needs the money?????.....he "WILL" make the MAX salary no matter what team he plays for.... and any team that can afford him "Will" give him the MAX....but like all dreamers here's to hoping he will sign with the Rangers, L.A., Edmonton, etc etc.....he will sign with who he wants....but us Leafs fans can't say he will sign with us because Burke maybe charged with "tampering"

Los Angeles Kings opening lineup:

Kovalchuk-Kopitar-Williams
Smyth-Stoll-Brown

Those are my thoughts.

And this comming from a Leafs fan who has Burke as their G.M.
The team who has a GM that will lead them to last place overall while trading their 1st rd picks for the next two yrs.

The only team I can see making a huge run at him at this point is Boston. However, I seriously hope he doesn't go anywhere. He is the face of the Atlanta franchise, and losing him would absolutely doom that team to mediocrity
