They're both even right now I'd say...Thornton might finish with more assists due to playing with Heatley though.

Pure playmaker? Thornton.
The better player? Malkin.

thornton's the better pure playmaker, but malkin's better at making things happen and taking over games.

Considering Thornton is beating everyone in the league (including Malkin) in another poll, it's safe to say he should lock this up fairly easily.

Crosby is in second in the other poll, FWIW.

Finishing a play is still making a play.

If you want to know who a better pure passer is, it's Thornton easily.

But Malkin is the better playmaker.

Thornton - 330 assists since lockout

Malkin - 198

While it is not the sole determining factor if Thornton were to be injured for an entire year Malkin would still need 132 assists to catch him.

I know Thornton played one more year in this time frame but Malkin does not even more career points then Thornton has assists since the lockout.

maybe because his rookie year was after the lock out. malkin is the better playmaker right now and in the future. its not right to compare a peaked thornton to a just starting malkin

This isn't football. A playmaker does not mean someone who makes plays it means someone who is a pass first player.
