Crap. It was clear he wasn't himself, and this honestly doesn't shock me. Sports Hernia? Hm, where have I heard of a mis-diagnosis and bringing a guy back way too early to only **** up the rest of his season and put his career in jeopardy? Oh, yeah. Gagne two years ago. Say what you want, but I put this on the training staff. Let him have the surgery and come back two weeks after when he should to be sure. If they would have identified and fixed this in August, he's back a month earlier.

meh
When Pitkanen had his in '05-06, he missed 24 games total...and his was horrendous--muscle off bone bad. While it sucks, it isn't the end of the world.

Does this mean a shot for Pat Maroon? And has anyone heard any rumors about length of time off for Gagne?

I'd like to see him get a shot, mainly because bumping a fourth liner up a line or two isn't a long term solution. Can we not have a healthy Gags and Briere at the same time for once

JVR/Hartnall-Carter-Briere
JVR/Hartnell-Richards-Giroux

Carcillo-Pyorala-Powe (liked what this line did a lot the other night)

Laperriere-Betts (remember, he should be back soon)-Asham

I don't see a particular need to call up Maroon at this point.

That's all fine as long as Johnny Boy realizes we can't do three scoring lines anymore. But he "likes" Giroux at centre so don't hold your breath.

What Jester said. Move Hartnell to the third line, move JVR and Giroux up (both have more talent then Hartnell and have played better so far). That's a scary top 6 and an efficient bottom 6. I'd like it.

EDIT: Actually, do we have 7 or 6 top 6 forwards with Gagne out? JVR and Giroux both count as top 6 guys.

If we have 7 then move Hartnell down and JVR and Giroux up. Otherwise, just move JVR and Giroux up and we're good.

gagne is done. He will be one of those guys who loses his scoring ability real fast never to return. He is so afraid to get hit it is sickening. A shell of himself. He floats around constantly. Doesn’t want to battle or get dirty at all.

At some point we all need to face reality. I think our bottom 6 lines are both capable of playing 10ish minutes a night without killing us and contributing some. However, usually those sorts of lines excel when they have a strong system to support their play and not force them to rely on skills they lack in (skating and playmaking, namely). Remains to be seen if we can have success under Stevens fielding a real 3rd line.

That would be consistent with this [rumoured] kind of injury, I guess.

Totally agree. Which is why I don't think this team will ever deliver until a competent coach and/or effective system is implemented.

TSN has an update on the situation...

FLYERS FORWARD GAGNE HAS TWO SMALL HERNIAS IN RIGHT GROIN
Quote:
PHILADELPHIA -- Flyers forward Simon Gagne has two small hernias in his right groin and could face surgery.

The Philadelphia left-winger had an ultrasound on Monday that discovered the hernias. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren says the team's medical staff will meet with Gagne on Wednesday to discuss his options.

Gagne has struggled this season with only one goal in nine games.

WASHINGTON -- Flyers’ left wing Simon Gagne has two small hernias in his right groin area and it appears to be a brand, new injury.

A decision on whether to perform surgery will be made Wednesday, after the club’s medical staff consults with Alan Schurict, a surgeon at Pennsylvania Hospital, who performed the ultrasound on Tuesday and others, including Gagne.

“I know it’s very vague, but it’s only because I don’t know any more,” general manager Paul Holmgren said before Tuesday’s game against the Capitals. “We need to sit down and talk to Simon about the whole thing going on here. [Surgery] is an option, yeah. I don’t know right now.”

Sign Shanahan (sadly as a replacement) and get it done now. Hernia's don't take a ridiculous amount of time to recover from and he could be back healthy for the 2nd half.

Jeez, two hernias?

This blows. And I can't imagine how frustrated Gagne must be...

There are three options:

1) This is why we have so many players on the roster. Asham, Powe, and Lappy fill in on the top-9.

2) This is why we have all this cap space. Maroon gets called up.

3) SIGN SHANAHAN! WE NEED WINGERS!!!!

Most likely we stick with number one. Betts will be back soon. Asham, Powe, and Lappy are playing well.

By the way, it's a shame but this likely puts the nail in coffin for Gagne's Olympic hopes. I considered him a lock a month ago.

I am not sure if they are exactly the same but here is how forecaster listed Briere's events:
