This move erases Martinez's roster spot as I see it.
Harrold stays as a semi-regular (and relatively effective) 4th line winger who can switch off in any game as a 6th D whenver there is a game misconduct or injury to one of the other Ds.
Jones can also be a special teams specialist. Either way, we gain something for nothing and now we no longer need another veteran D.
I really don't know what the Flyers were thinking. If there is not more to this, then this is some serious mismanagement on their part. Now they are literally up against the cap wall by like $300k. They weren't trying to get rid of him, they wanted to actually bring him up and use him in their lineup. Very risky gamble which just crippled them financially for the season.
Simon Gagne is expected to be put on LTIR, which will give them a lot more wiggle room.

Not quite sure what they were thinking though.
I highly doubt he is out for the season. It is poor asset management either way.

MURRAY: “I think, when you get a new player coming in like this… We have some practice time now. After today, we’ve got a couple days of practice, (then) play and a couple more days of practice. So we’ll get him acclimated to the structure and the system and then we go from there. I really like what our group of defensemen are doing right now, so I’m not going to disrupt it, but the depth is an issue that we did have some concerns about, coming through the early part of the season, and now we’re in pretty decent shape in that look.”"

Flyers fan here. We've been livid about Jones for years now. He's just not a good defenceman, he takes too long to make decisions, shoots at the shins of opposing players, falls for no reason. The hit on Bergeron was not his fault, Bergeron turned at the last minute and put himself in the worst position.
Holmgren overpaid him BADLY when his contract was up. He played like crap yet Stevens continued to play him over other defencemen which made us even angrier. Then in September, they sent him to the AHL, we were happy until yesterday when this happened. As far as any of us know, there are no injuries to Flyers dmen that will keep them out of the lineup, Gagne is a winger so recalling Jones made no sense. We also knew that if anyone picked him up, we'd be on the hook for half the salary and that's the reason everyone's been freaking out the past 2 days. It was bad enough that he'd be recalled (for some reason Stevens and Holmgren love him) but we all figured that at half price, someone out there who was in a bit of trouble on defence could use him. I guess that's you guys, and it sounds like he's not going to be getting much ice time in LA but is more of an insurance policy. Meanwhile, with the addition of half his salary, we're screwed with the cap again. Last year when Timonen got sick, we couldn't play Giroux because it would have put us over the cap. We're in position to have the exact same thing happen this year.
This is a great pick up. Jones adds depth for a team that needs it on the NHL level at D. This will ensure that Hickey, Voynov etc stay in Manchester the full year to go after the Calder Cup. IMO this will allow TM to give OD some nights off so he doesn't ware down as he did last year. The price was right.
So, any idea what number he'll wear? He was 6 in PHI but that is OD's. Maybe he'll take 4. What do you say Kings fans, should he take 4?
Well, I'm excited. Some Flyer fans really seem to have it out for him, not exactly sure why. He didn't work out with the team, that's all that you can really say.

You'll find out soon enough! Most of us are thrilled that he's gone from our system.

He did wear #29 when he broke into the league, and I do believe that number is available.
Right, I was just responding to your comment that "they are literally up against the cap wall by like $300k".
Even if Gagne only misses a month, that's almost three quarters of a million in cap space.
Eh....no....that is not how the LTIR works. Gagne will always count against the cap....they can just replace his salary while he is gone....but then they have to make room when he returns. I cannot see them trading for or signing a player that they will have to waive or trade in the near future.
Sounds like he's been the Flyers Modry-Corvo whipping dman. Seems like an ok fill in, but nobody LA would want to count on to play some serious minutes. Depth I hope they will not need too often. But he does allow the kids to skate big minutes in the A.
Check out this gem from page 14 of the Randy Jones thread(that's right, page 14....out of 20 or so).

Here's a ****ing clue, *********: When teams ask about a player, that means that they are interested. And interested teams will generally love to have a player at half-price on an expiring contract.
You filthy ****ing ****. Your mother sucks ***** in Hell.
We're pissed because a player who shouldn't have had such a ridiculous contract is now on another team while we're stuck with half of his cap hit. Our anger is not because we're pissed we lost a good player, we're pissed because a mediocre player with a bad contract is tying up our cap space and isn't even on the team any longer. Many of us were hoping he wouldn't be called up.
This is like Modry coming to the Flyers, but in reverse. Randy Jones is the target of scorn and oppression.
Hopefully Murray keeps him off the power play and uses him as a 3rd pair defenseman. Any more than that and it's an uncomfortable situation. It's bad enough he pissed of off as a Flyer, since the Flyers are stuck with half the cap it, I'll be however much more pissed off if he sucks for the Kings too.

No fail. Not unless you want a lot of shots blocked. The 31 points he had a couple years ago was totally point-hawking. Like when we thought Jaroslav Modry was good because he racked up assists. His best season though was when Murray was here running the defense, it is worth noting that it was the same season. He also got to play with the exiled Lasse Kukkonen, who was the only partner where he had a plus-rating (they also were getting 3rd pair minutes -- take the hint Murray).
Im calling it now, he will be the most pleasnt surprise of the season for you guys. He had a helluva season and playoffs for Philly 2 years back and got hurt needed more time to recover and never had it.
Then he gets thrown under the bus and he never recovered from it.
For what is going to be expected of him, he will play very good imo.
Holy Crap, reading the Flyer's fans posts about this pick up is like diving into a hornets nest....it's 20 pages of just angry ranting. I can't tell if it's because they're mad about the pick up or if it's because they're from Philadelphia and that' s what they do.
