Lidström says yes to the Olympics - Captain?

Last time around, Sundin was Team Sweden's captain. Do you think Lidström will be the undisputed captain this time?

He will be the captain unless Mats Sundin or Jörgen Jönsson desides to make a comeback in time for the olympics.

I hope you're kidding, cause Jönsson would never be the captain as long as Lidström is on the team.

Lidas is obviously the captain. Jörgen Jönsson wouldn't even make the team.

Thankfully BÅG seems unaware of Larsson's level of awesome. If he was on the team, Lidas would turn up to practice watch Adam for a moment and go: "I'm too old for this ****!" and retire on the spot.

Just wouldn't seem like a fitting end for such a legend.

I don't think Alfie would be captain of this team. Lidstrom is the first European born captain to win a Stanley Cup. I think that there is enough to warrant him being captain.

IMO this is a no brainer, ofc Lids should wear the C.

Alfredsson and Zetterberg would probably get the A's.

Rödtott would never be selected captain for the swedish olympic team.

Wouldn't be captain but probably the second best d-man on the team. Too bad he has also got mad car washing skills. It's like when you had to choose between soccer and hockey as a kid.

Or maybe he's just honing his skills on cars like Karate Kid and will come back to hockey better than ever.

Wax on, wax off

On paper, but could be the best considering he was the best defender in Torino, which was a Norris-year for Lidstrom. God I wish he never retired

Kenny would most likely be captain of the team if he was still playing. I don't quite understand how Kenny and Sundin can retire before an Olympic year. I wanted Sundin to play one year for Djurgården, mentoring Josefson, Krüger, Engqvist, etc.

Sundin playing for DIF again was a pipe-dream I had for so long..

You really think Kenny Jönsson would get the captaincy ahead of Lidström? Sure he's played more in Sweden, but Lidström seems to be loved and respected by the whole hockey world. Not to mention being the best d-man of the last decade and only European captain to "lead" his team to the Stanley Cup.

Would be an odd selection if you ask me.

Kenny is more Tre Kronor then Lidström. Sundin is the only one I can see being captain over Kenny the last few years.

No doubt, but since this is the Olympics I think Lidström is the better choice. Team-mates, opposition, refs etc have such great respect for him.

Anyhow it doesn't really matter since Kenny retired. I agree that the timing is bizarre. He was a lock to play a big role on the team and he quits now? Must have become bored with hockey or something.

And while we're on the subject.. Was he really the best d-man of the Olympics in 2006 or is it a bit of a myth? To be honest my memory of that tournament isn't exactly crystal clear since it was some time ago and I haven't seen the games since then, but I was viewing the stats from the tournament the other day and saw this:

Kenny Jönsson
GP 8 G 0 A 4 TP 4 +/- 0

Nicklas Lidström
GP 8 G 3 A 3 TP 6 +/- 2

Now I know full well that stats don't tell the whole story and how great Kenny is in his own end, but Lidström did pretty damn well too from what I can recall and scored the oh so important GWG of the final while outperforming Kenny in the stat department.

So who was really the best in this tournament? Jönsson or Lidström?

Lidström hasn't really been the force in Tre Kronor as he has been for the Red Wings in my opinion. Why I don't know, but to give him the "C" seems a bit like giving Foppa the "Best Player" award after the game against Finland in Karjala Cup.

The question in my mind is, who, if not Lidas, would you then give it to?

Alfie never struck me as one of the leaders on Tre Kronor.

"Z" does not strike me as a "C" kinda guy, but surely an "A"

I would actually not mind Bäckström as our Captain, or, as a dark horse, Påhlsson, who is, in my book, one of the most underated players in the world, but surely respected by his peers.

What I do know for certain is the Mats left a big void behind him.

In fairness, Lidström has been on Detroit who have had a great team for such a long time. Sundin on Detroit wouldn't have the chance to play (and win) all those World Championships. He probably would have a bunch of SC rings though. Lidström has been great on Tre Kronor most of the times he has played like in the Olympics 2002 (2nd on team Sweden in points= 6 points in 4 games) and 2006 (6 points in 8 games). I think it's quite unfair to call that the same thing as Foppa's comeback attempt at Karjala Cup.

But Lidström refused Tre Kronor a couple of times didn't he? Anyhow I don't care. Just give him the captaincy.

Zetterberg will likely be the next captain of Detroit so I think he has some leadership qualities even if he is the Swedish Beckham . Pålsson isn't a high profile player and seems quite shy. Not captain material imo. It's Lidström or Alfie in my mind and Lidström being the strong favourite.
