As an aside, I have this thought. If a team has an underperforming player without a NMC, can it just unilaterally loan him to KHL, ship him out to f'ing Siberia, in order to have the accepting team pay off part of the players salary, and removing the cap hit in the process? And if the player refuses such a loan, his contract is voided?

That's almost too easy.. especially since there are quite a lot of overpaid NHL players that KHL would be willing to take on at their full salary..

Yes. Unless the player is considered a 35+yo player when they signed their contract, in which case the cap hit would stick regardless (as long as it's not terminated due to a refusal to report).

One thing to keep in mind when it comes to the KHL is there is a limit of five foreign-born players signed per team and only four can play per game. KHL contracts can be terminated I believe and it's possible the league could relax that rule further in the years to come.

Loaning a player to the KHL works the same as loaning a player to the AHL in regards to the Cap and salary. The Cap hit is gone, the contract is still counted, and the salary is divided up amongst the NHL team and the AHL/KHL team at an amount TBD.

The difference being, a KHL team can pay you a whole lot more for a decent player..

I'm not believing it until Bob McKenzie twitters it, then takes it back.

cmasisak22: GM George McPhee would not confirm the report that Nylander-to-the-KHL is done after the game.
Could be the destination is pretty close to being finalized in terms of Nylander's preferences but not the compensation side.

At some point the Caps are going to give up on the compensation side. I mean, what leverage do they have? None. Thought so..

I have been trying to stay away from even thinking Nylander could be gone but it seems the end is hopefully nearing.

Now I am just going to laugh when we all disagree with how the extra money is spent. Removing Nylander removes an excuse.

So, once this is announced, does GMGM do anything, or simply bank cap space for the trade deadline. I mean, the team has its flaws, but is essentially in first place in the league.

I don't see why we would force our hand now. It's not like there are awesome veteran top-4 defensemen ripe for the picking.

I would fully expect that we just accumulate some cap space and focus on scouting for the deadline.

Is piggybacking off Chesnokov's tweet, no doubt.

and who knows... getting Alzner and/or Carlson some game time, seeing their progress and ability, could lead us to make a wiser decision about how to spend that extra cash.
