Scotty Bowman, the legendary former coach and now an adviser for the Chicago Blackhawks, believes next year's NHL salary cap could drop about $2-million, a reasonable prediction given how little box-office revenue is being generated in Phoenix, Tampa and Atlanta. Even the rising Canadian dollar won't offset those black holes. If that cap forecast is ultimately how it plays out, you'd have to think most general managers will get even more gun shy about adding high-priced help (such as Giguere) unless they're on expiring contracts. Cheaper options (such as Martin Biron of the Islanders) will become far more attractive.
Ideally IMO the cap would be spread out something like this give and take here and there with 13 forwards, 7 defenders and 2 goalies on the roster with a cap hit of $55m.
30 million on forwards, 25 millions on D and goalie.
1st line $15 million
2nd line $7 million
3rd line $5.5 million
4th line $2 million
reserve forward $0.5 million
1st d-pair $10 million
2nd d-pair $6 million
3rd d-pair $3.5 million
7th d-man $0.5 million
Goalie + backup $5 million
Today we spend on each line by somewhat going by there ice time average (not the best way to judge but it gives an idea anyway on how the financial resources are being used)
1st line (Kessel - Stajan - Stempniak) $10 million
2nd line (Hagman - Grabovski - Blake) $10 million
3rd line (Ponikarovski - Mitchell - Kulemin) $4 million
4th line (Wallin - Primeau - Orr) $3.2 million
reserve forward (Mayers) $1.3 million
1st d-pair (Beauchemin - Kaberle) $8.25 million
2nd d-pair (White - Komisarek) $5.35 million
3rd d-pair (Finger - Schenn) $6.5 million with bonuses
7th d-man (Exelby) $0.85 million
Goalie + backup (Toskala and Gustavsson) $5 million
The teams cap management is not awful even do it is not good either seeing as we spend a few million to much on lower pairing d-mans and bottom six players thus taking away the possibility to spend that cash higher up on elite(ish) players.
Having said that I am not so keen on spending the cash we do on most of the top six players either but it is the players, not the salary paid out to that position that bugs me (if that makes sense?).
If you have the chance to have Pronger and Chara for a combined first pairing of $13.25 million then you dont say no to that but seeing as the both play 25+ minutes you can split them up for most of the time and have cheaper defenders pairing up with them. I just took this numbers as an example on how I would want the team to be built salary cap wise.
I dunno if the Leafs are gonna be in too good a position next summer.
Gustavsson, White, and Mitchell are due significant raises.
Say Burke makes a few moderate UFA signings, doesn't bring back any of the pending UFAs, and promotes the top prospects, then the cap might look similar to this:
Sure, not all the prospects are gonna make the jump, but anyone in their place should at least be in the same salary range.
Burke is gonna have to get creative if he wants to make a major splash. Maybe dealing Grabovski or waiving Finger are possibilities.
*Just using Ott and Auld as UFA examples, and I made up the RFA cap hits
If you look where we stand, relative to other teams, we are in a very good position. That's the point. I also think if there's a money crunch, we can get some UFA's at a reasonable price. This is the perfect year to have cap space.
Nice thread. It should be a fun free agency for us. Especially if we can get Blakes 4 mil, and Fingers 3.5 mil off our hands somehow.... but we'll more likely have to wiave them.

ROSTER SIZE 22 SALARY CAP $53,462,500
Note: 3rd line above is used as a 2nd line and the 2nd line above used as a 3rd line. Players not on the team such as Kulemin, Kaberle, Tlusty, Grabovski etc are traded to get the above pieces in a Leaf uniform. If Colby Armstrong can not be signed then Steve Ott will be main target if he does not sign that salary goes to Ponikarovski who then is resigned. Team would be a little cap heavy on D but a still under the salary cap. Extra cap space can be used for a veteran centre for depth at 3rd and 4th line.
No way does the cap decrease by $2million. At worst it'll just stay where it's at.
***BOZAK isn't dominating at the AHL level...as a matter of fact he is playing below expectations for him. His contract or nhl cap hit would be way too high for a player not ready yet to contribute offensively. He looks like he is playing scared out there in the pro game. He needs to learn to play harder thru the physical and rough stuff. No way does he make the Leafs next year.
BTW....the Marlies need to find another veteran playmaking centreman to play with the young prospect wingers after the departure of Mike Zigomanis. How in the hell do u develop wingers with no centremen to feed them ??? Foster,Scott,Ondrus don't cut it at all as far as playmakers. Besides Scott and Ondrus are natural wingers themselves. Need centres really badly. Brent is out for the season and gawd knows when Boyce will be back. Burkie help those Marlies and yound wingers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back to the salary cap.......here is what the team needs to look like for next season :
* Sign Patrick Marleau at all costs....best offensive player(of the available UFA's) next to Kovalchuk(kovie will stay with Atl)......5yrs - 31 million
blake - marleau - kessel 15.6 million
pony - grabovski - hagman 8.7 million
stalberg - kadri - hanson 3.4 million
rosehill - mitchell - orr 2.3 million
deveaux - foster 1.1 million
komisarek- kabby 8.8 million
schenn - beauchemin 6.8 million
finger - gunnarsson 4.2 million
oreskovic .5 million
gustavsson 3.0 million
macdonald 1.0 million
tucker(buyout) 1.0 million
TOTAL CAP HIT = $$$ 56 400 000
*** Blake is untradeable. Leafs will live with his contract til expiration thereof.
*** White + prospect traded(at deadline) for a later-middle first round draft pick.
*** NOW a more desired team for 2010/11 constructed from a series of transactions I would make as GM of the Leafs:
- stajan traded at deadline for a 3rd rounder(yes will be ufa but some playoff team will require that 3rd line C as due to injuries)
- stempniak traded for a 4th rounder(see stajan brackets)
- grabovski, i.white, tlusty and prospect jimmy hayes traded to Florida for Nathan Horton and a salary dump(approx. $2.5 million) to be eaten by sending to minors(FLOR then signs ponikarovsky as ufa to play again with grabo)
- kulemin not brought back....probably goes to KHL
- trade Exelby for a 3rd rounder(if possible....some team may need rugged dman for playoffs and depth)
- sign Patty Marleau 5 yrs - 32 million
- sign Adam Mair....sandpaper and decent defensive 4th line centre
- sign Steve Begin ... good scrappy defensive 4th line winger
stalberg - marleau - horton 11.3 NOW
blake - kadri - kessel 11.2 THIS IS
hagman - mitchell - hanson 4.9 A MUCH
begin - mair - orr 3.6 BETTER
rosehill - a.foster 1.1 TEAM !!!
