Dany Sabourin

He's only 24, and he's playing VERY VERY WELL...
We can't ingnore this.
We all have Chiodo over him right now, but IMO Sabourin has outperformed him big time THIS year... Chiodo is struggling and maybe some ECHL time will do him some good, but it's never too late to include Sabourin in our plans.

He's trying his best and doing very well.

You do know that Sabourin has already been rewarded this season with a call-up to WBS right?
He also played in Mondays win over Norfolk Admirals in a 4-1 win.
But to get to your point, yes he is playing very, very well this season, I'll be the first person to admit I didn't have him making such an impression so early on in the season.

Sabourin may be a nice find. He was mainly released by Calgary because they simply only have room for one goaltender in the minors.

That said, I don't expect Sabourin to be anything more than a 3rd stringer in this organization.

Does he have a contract or option with Pittsburgh or just an AHL contract?

You mean Exter...

I was also one of those who thought Sabourin would be a weak link in the goaltending department... 3rd stringer right now, but I wouldn't say back-up isn't reachable for him... Give him some more time... He's 24.

AHL contract I believe.

Having Sabourin somewhat emerge as a depth player for the now, and then looking at the very good and deep pool of younger goalies that the Penguins have rights to... it just brings up the ever unanswered question.

When the heck will we sign a goalie coach?

I do like Sabourin as an NHL backup a little more than I like Chiodo. Mainly because of his size. I feel goalies like Chiodo that rely on reflexes need to keep active, I don't see Chiodo being able to come off the bench with his agility in tact. Sabourin (or any huge netminder) can come in after sitting on the bench and dominate based on positioning and net coverage.

When the lockout ends. I read the Penguins were supposedly talking to John Vanbiesbrouck (among some unnamed others) about joining the staff before the lockout, but the Penguins aren't in any rush to add anyone under the current circumstances.

Wilkes-Barre has Gilles Lefebvre as a goalie coach, anyway.

Geeze, I've never even heard of the guy. Good eye, clefty.

From what I remember, Beezer said to the post-gazette that the Penguins inquired but then interest dropped off.

One guy I've always wanted to see brought in as a goalie coach is Bill Ranford.

I think the guy is more of an outside consultant of sorts as opposed to an official, full time coach. Nevertheless, I'm sure he'd be working with the team in some capacity, as would Meloche.

News to me, thanks.

I knew of Meloche, but I thought he was a Canadian scout who spent time with the goalies every so often. He did that last year, I think. I guess since Fleury and Chiodo both were in WBS they made him full time.

Those stats really hurt.

Sabourin was in the Flames prospect pool a year or so ago and never really amounted to anything. Basically, with goaltenders; they take so much more time to mature, so it's no surprise that a 24 year old goaltender is finally getting it all to click.

Yeah, just to reiterate though - those are Exter's stats, not Sabourin's.

He (Exter) did just earn his first win though, in a 7-6 shootout.

Well, Dany did start some games for teh Calgary Flames last season.

He has never been a started in his career though, that is troubling.
