Not nearly enough for a player of Semin caliber but thats just me. Two first are interesting but they would be high picks considering he would make 2 dangerous duos (Gomez-Gionta and Pleks-Semin).Also him and Ovie seems like good friends so I HIGHLY doubt it.
Semin is an incredible player, but if Washington keeps him, Backstrom AND Ovechkin, they will have the same cap problems as Chicago, Tampa (when Richards was there) etc.. Semin will be demanding a big raise when his contract expires....

Washington is a contending team and are not rebuilding so they'd want roster players instead of two average prospects +picks. Thats pretty basic I think.
Bad or average teams with aging and declining players need picks to rebuild while good young and rising teams need veterans and proven talent to support their young stars and plug holes. Obviously aging teams can be good and keep their core (this is what Gainey did until this year) and young teams can be bad (which means they can continue trying to get young players). Decisions that don't fall within this logic are usually failing ones. Regardless of the age of their group teams due to make the playoffs also try to get roster players in exchange of picks. In this case it makes no sense that we get the star player, Washington might go deep in the playoffs and we might miss them.
Hmm, I do know how much Semin is valuable to the caps, but giving 2 first rounders, a 2nd rounder and 2 young players with potential sounds like a bargain not to ignore. Though, caps probably won't consider this offer this season.
This years draft is supposed to be the deepest since 2003... we are one big losing streak away from being a serious top 5 pick contender.

imagine giving up 2 top 5-10 picks to end up with 4 picks in the 20-30 range (or something of that nature)

Sure he gets a good player, but he gives a divisional rival the possible 1st overall pick of next year's draft.
You only do this if a) you get a superstar/franchise player (which he isn't) or b) it's a very poor draft year (it isn't).
We could possibly get a top5 pick if our injury luck keeps going in the same direction.
At this point, I don't think I'd do that trade. Semin would be great, but he'd be another big salary to add at the end of this year. If we can't afford him, then we could possibly trade him or get compensation in case of offer sheets. But it would be tough to beat a top5 pick if that's what we'd end up giving.

But if the offer sheet would be giving after this year's draft. So we don't know how good the pick we'd receive would turn out to be. And unless I'm mistaken, the draft in 2011 won't be as good as next year's.
Honestly, who cares about draft picks. We have a decent farm as it is, we don't need any more first rounders.
I admit though, that it will be hard to sign him with the smurf line signed to big money already, but if we give him a zetterberg type deal, we can get a lower cap hit maybe??

I wouldn't do it. Semin is always injured, plus how can habs afford the 7 mil a year he would command? The team would still not be a real contender and we would be in the same position as the leafs with no picks.
Add me to the "No way" brigade. Semin is a talented player to be sure, but we've got a couple problems there. One is that we can't afford him. Another is that we really shouldn't go around trading our 1st round picks. Either one (or ideally both) of them could turn out to be a Semin-calibre player, given that the current team doesn't seem to be very competitive. And when the current cap crisis is over, we'll need to have those players stepping up as part of our new core.
