New York/Brooklyn Americans (Going really old school)
Atlanta Knights (Some of their ads had lines like "Knightmare on Peachtree Street" "Hockey Knight in Atlanta")
Atlanta Fire Ants (Short-lived RHI team)
Gwinnett Gladiators (A minor league team without a cutesy name)
As a kid, always wondered why would a team call themselves as "Whalers".
Now I love the name.
I heard (or read) that since the New England WHA team didn't have a nickname in its first few days, they went by the New England WHA'ers -- with the apostrophe looking like the letter L and thus the Whalers were created.
Miami Screaming Eagles (of course)
Quebec Nordiques (when said in French)
California Golden Seals
San Francisco Spiders
Binghamton Broome Dusters
Trail Smoke Eaters
Minnesota Fighting Saints
San Antonio Iguanas Non-hockey: San Antonio Gunslingers of the USFL

It's hard to put NHL teams in the good list because of their familiarity. Little known teams with quirky or unique names tend to stand out more.
