Andrei Markov's next contract?

Still a little early, but I'm already thinking about Markov's next contract. Next season will be the last on his 4-year deal, and that contract is looking like a bargain.

If he continues playing like an elite d-man, I can easily see him getting 7 million per season.

I would definitely extend him for another 4 years..but I wonder if it'll be hard to lock him up, considering Cammalleri, Gomez and Gionta are all making big bucks. Not to mention Price will need a new deal.

Hamrlik's contract will be up at the same time, so that will save some cash. Even if we do re-sign Hammer, it more than likely won't be at the same amount he's making now. And if you have to choose between them, we all know who the obvious choice is. Plekanec obviously needs to be locked up as well.

Anyways, losing Markov is a scary thought. He seems to love playing in Montreal, so I'm going to stay optimistic that something will get worked out.

Markov walking is completely unacceptable, I really don't care which of the big 3 (Gomez, Gionta, Hamrlik) has to go to make room. Markov is the top priority, he goes Gainey better pack his **** up.

Either Hamrlik will retire, or go else where, or Gomez will be traded.

knowing markov, he will likely ask for that.
IMO, he won't ask for a shocking raise and will agree to sign for another 4-5-6 years.

something like 6.5 x 4

For myself, Gainey has three big decision to made. First is Plekanec, UFA at July first, Carey Price, RFA at July first and Andrei Markov, UFA next year. With salary cap and everything, it will be important for Bob Gainey to sign early those players.

7 years / 46.5 millions for Markov? 8,8,8,7,6,5,4.5

Long term, cap friendly contract.

Something like Pronger got, lock him up till he's like 45.

I would go longer, make it a 9 year deal. He will be 32 when his contract expires so take him right through his 41 year old season.

Markov is like Lidstrom in that he just keeps on getting better with age. And also like Lidstrom our MVP will be the highest paid player on the team. 7.5/year.

Hamrlik and the 5.5 million are also coming off the books next year.

After next season,Laraque,Gill,Markov and Hamrlik are UFA.Pretty safe to say both Laraque and Gill aren't coming back, that would be almost 4 millions of savings.

Money will be there for Markov to stay, that's if he wants to anyways.

Lidstrom, if he were 30 like Markov and signed a new contract this year would likely get way more than 7.5 million.

Why cant we cheat the CBA too?

I say an 10 year deal

7 *6
3.5*2
1.75*1
0.875*1

Average cap hit of..... 5.1625

This comment would be relevant if Markov was no longer in what is considered his "prime." At (almost) 31 yrs old players should be reaching their peak. We'll see what happens when his physical skills begin their decline.

Way to compare him to a top 10 all-time defenseman. I didn't realize he was a lock for the HHOF. Congrats Andrei!

However you're correct in saying that he should be our top paid player and all future contracts should fall into line behind him, with the notable exception of Mr. Gomez.

Exactly, if Chicago, Philly etc can play the collective agreement why not us? Sign him for a long term deal that will pay him $6-7M for the first 5-6 seasons and then slowly bring it down within the rules to bring the cap hit to under $5M if possible.
