Gainey trying to make another splash - trade talk!

I know that Gainey went crazy on June 30th (Gomez) and July 1st (Cammalleri and Gionta etc.) However, I think that Gainey is going to either:

1) Make another splash during the season with a trade
2) Try to sell certain assets for prospects and picks come the trade deadline

Rumor has it that both Lecavalier (Tampa Bay) and Staal (Carolina) are available, I would love to see a guy like Staal in Montreal, a 6'3'' - 200 pound center that has averaged 40 to 45 goals a season and is making $6,000,000.00 this season!

Mind you, if Gainey is going to make a splash he will need the seller to take on Hamrlik's salary or possibly Gomez!

This morning on the Team 990, they were discussing a Gomez for Lecavalier deal.

Discuss...

Now that Tampa pooped in Bob's hands few months ago, I say : die with your fat contracts unless you trade them for almost nothing. Eric Staal : yummee.

McGuire say's it's a southern team that is going to make a huge deal sooner than later and Kovalchuk is not going anywhere so I would say Lecavalier or Staal traded before the deadline, I just hope Toronto DOES NOT make a bid for either, especially Staal (because Lecavalier would not play in Toronto).

am I high?

I swear I thought for certain these rumors died when his new contract kicked in,

on staal who wouldn't want him? but lets be honest, thats their franchise. If they trade him there going after Hall or Seguin. But if he is seriously injured why wouldn't they just keep him and get Hall and have a sick first line?

Toronto doesn't have the assests to make a trade like that

staal for hamrlik or gomez plus other crap we have .. comon let's be realistic.

if they want to trade staal (which I highly doubt) it's to shed salary, 6 million isnt that much for a player that caliber, its a bargain really.

what would montreal give them, what top prospect making little cash do we have.

price? they have cam ward
pk subban maybe....
you better add in there a couple of 1st and 2nd round picks
what other crazy good players we have making little bucks.... NONE unless they are dumb enough to take the 2 brothers,

or maybe pleckanec.... he is good and makes under 3 million.

try filling an arena with pleckanec your first center (in the south) won't happen forget stall.

as for lecavalier. no thx k bye.

Honestly though do you have any idea how many assests we would have to give up for Staal? think of what the leafs gave up for Kessel and just keep adding

Are you serious? Carolina is going for and getting Hall/Seguin regardless to whether Staal is traded!

Pleks isn't an option, his contract ends this year. Canes won't go for that. Eric stall has 8.250 mill cap hit.

His salary for this season and the upcoming ones:
09-10 10-11 11-12
6.000 7.500 7.750 8.500 9.250

I like Staal, I just don't see how we can fit him.

If we're going by Kessel-scale...

The price for Staal would probably be 4 1st rounder, 2 2nd rounder.
Plus the move for cap space (Hamrlik) plus a warm body at C (Metro or Lapierre or Pleks), unless we could sell them the idea of picking Gomez both as the cap relief (in that case, we probably keep Hamrlik) and the warm body.

I really, really like Staal. But at that price, what about ... no?

I hope Gainey does not do much, he would not be dealing from strength and Montreal's pro scouting does not have a strong recent history (Samsonov over Dumont, lots of solid players dumped (Conroy, Robidas, Ribeiro, Hainsey, Beauchemin...)).

I doubt that clearing out anyone Martin (and Peary, though given his recent PP-killing history I don't see why anyone would listen to him) doesn't like will make the team better. Latendresse may not have been very coachable here, but I'm sure Lemaire will find a way to get him to listen and I thought he looked good this year in spite of his lack of production.

That said the cap would have to go up significantly for Bob to keep everyone, and he needs to sign Plekanec long term. I hope he succeeds in dumping salary without trading the remaining prospects (Subban, mainly) and picks. It is going to be a tough run as most of the big contracts are new and all the other teams are trying to reduce salary as well. I guess Hamrlik, Halak, and Andrei are the main candidates, but Andrei and Halak have not peaked (their value will likely rise in a year or two) and the habs need Hamrlik.

Going to be a tough year for Bob. Maybe they leave Gomez on the IR for the rest of his contract, refuse to let him come back like the Flyers did with Briere?

Let TO get Vinnie until he's 40 at a 7.3m cap hit per year. That would be great, because not only would they get an overpaid player, they'd have to give up more prospects/picks to get him and they'll be majorly screwed. Just hoping it's not us who gets scammed into taking over Vinny's contract.

At this point, Schenn LOST value compared to last year.
Bozak is pretty much a warm body able to play on a Top-6 on a desperate team, and Stalberg, well, was great in the lone game that I saw.

Plus, that move would make Ciarelli look like a genius. I mean... Staal is MUCH, MUCH better than Kessel, right?

Carolina wants a top six forward, a top four (young) defenseman and a draft pick!

If Lats listen to what Lemaire says in the 1-2 times they'll face each other this year, then the Wild will sent him packing.

this is just not right talent wise, but who died to give the Leafs the cap space?
