Oskars Bartulis: 3yr/$1.8M contract extension per Daily News

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/frequentflyers/

Quote:
Oskars Bartulis has only been in the National Hockey League for 23 days but has already earned his first contract extension.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed to the Daily News late last night that the Flyers had signed Bartulis, a 2005 third round pick, to a three-year contract extension worth $1.8 million. He was set to become a restricted free-agent at the end of this season.
$600K cap hit starting next season.

The second contract. Got it done early before he had too good of a season. Exactly what the Kings did with Davis Drewiskie.

He reminds me of a bigger Sbisa. Kinda like when Sbisa didn't appear out of place in his first 10 games with the Flyers last year. 23 games is an awfully short trial period but whatever, it's 600k for what appears to be a reliable 6th\7th guy with promising potential.

Very, very pleased.

At first I read it as a 1.8 million cap hit. I was kind of befuddled for a bit. Then I read the post.

He looks a lot better, perhaps should have at least gotten a look in a couple games last year, AND for our cap situation, makes significantly less in comparison to similar players at this stage in their career. Job well done.

Decent player, great contract. Looks like he'll be a mainstay on the 3rd pairing for a long time.

What does this mean for Marshall, Bourdon, and Bertilsson, if anything?

Signing a player to 600K a year doesn't mean they're a lock for the top 6, but a 3 year deal means they must like what they see so far.

Current 2010-11 cap hit = $47.1M for 9 forwards, 4 defensemen and 1 goalie.
Future Flyers at this time:
Briere, Richards, Gagne, Carter, Hartnell, van Riemsdyk, Laperriere, Giroux, Cote.
Timonen, Pronger, Carle, Bartulis.
Boucher.
If cap remains flat at $56.8M, that's $9.7M to spend on 5 forwards, 3 defensemen and a goalie (a full 23-man roster). That may not sound good, but compared to this year's roster (for those same 14 signed players), the Flyers have $1.3M more to spend next year on those remaining 9 spots (Thank you, Mr. Pronger).

Good. Shores up the bottom pairing with potential on the second for a very reasonable price.

I thought this was wierd....

Bartulis has averaged 13:28 in ice time but has not played more than 10 minutes in either of his last two games.
Stevens please spread the love around on defense. Stop killing our top pairing guys.

As long as he heals up, I foresee the flyers resigning Powe. He's a cheap cap hit for certain.

Kind of off topic, but do you guys think we'll re-sign Asham? I hope so.

Great contract; I hope Bartulis plays well enough over the next 3+ seasons to regret signing for that amount.

This team resigns Powe, Asham, and Betts as long as they aren't asking for much more than the minimum. They are good roleplayers and the team isn't going to have cap room to go after a top 6 type of guy anyway.

Eh, I think it's 50/50 with Asham depending what they want to do about guys on the Phantoms presently going forward. If a guy like Kalinski or Maroon makes their way onto the roster over the course of this year then I think it's doubtful he's back.

Thats a pretty fantastic move by homer if you consider that bartulis is having a great year so far. When you consider he is essentially Randy jones but without the ****-ups it's a great price. Hell Jones got 3 mil, finger got 3.5 mil. Who would you rather your team have right now. I think bartulis has bags of potential. Could easily be a number 3# defenseman we were always looking for

I don't think his ceiling is that high... at least not on a team with good defense. He'll be a solid 3rd pairing guy that will be able to play for stretches on the 2nd pairing without looking like a moron. But I think his ceiling is 4/5 at best.
