Yep, take your time and come back 100% healed. We can't afford to lose you again this season.

Smyth skating today

Ryan Smyth, who had been scheduled to get on the ice Monday, is actually out right now in a yellow practice jersey, doing some light passing drills with Justin Williams.

A thought occured to me during the game last night about Smyth.

We are constantly harping on his front of net presence and how badly the team misses it with him injured. However what we never mention is his behind the net presence.

Smyth is really the only King who truly knows how to use 'the office'. He controls action with his play back there whereas Kopitar, Frolov, Simmonds and the rest can at best control the puck behind the net and make a play. A far cry from slowing down the whole play and drawing 6 sets of opposition eyes towards one man behind the goalie.

While going to the front is a talent others can mimic by mustering some balls and crashing, that office action is really sorely missed and not something I think you can really coach other players to do. Hopefully Kopi is paying attention to this facet of Smyth's game as much as he is the rest.

This is what I was alluding to in my comment in the PGT about how Kopitar plays differently with Frolov than with Smyth. When Kopitar Frolov and Williams were working the cycle in the corner, Frolov brought the puck down toward the back of the net, Kopitar, if Smyth had done the same thing, would have bolted for the net. Instead, he rotated back up high and missed a scoring opportunity, assuming Frolov threads that pass like Smyth would have. it a key component to the offensive system, particularly when the D-men are NOT getting their shots through.

Lets give DD44 some point time on the PP, he seems to find ways to get his shots to the net.

Diehard and JDM you guys said it best...

There is only one Ryan Smyth. That why he is called what was that "Captain Canada?"

Maybe we should get Holstrom from Detroit, Ryan Malone from Tampa. Dusbinsky from the Rangers. Hartnell from the Flyers. Michalek from Ottawa. Or the heck with it - let's trade for Stamkos for Frolov, JJ, Voinov and a 1st round pick for "Stamkos." Pick ONE only....

Then we have our true 2nd line Center or perhaps a true #1 center on Stamkos. Just a thought... I know some people will harp on these...

Stamkos isn't going anywhere unless you start with Kopitar.

I think other guys are willing to go to the net but Murray won't put those guys on the power play...ie Simmonds.

Why Purcell is still on the power play baffles me. It's like they don't want to make the Moulson mistake again so they keep putting him out there...

By the way, a little birdie told me that Smyth had a concussion and the Kings are covering it up....

Nothing from that hit he took from Ballard would indicate a concussion. He wasn't hit high, his head didn't hit anything, etc. If he does have a concussion, its from something previous maybe? It looked far more likely to be a shoulder injury to me from the way he landed after the hit.

If there is anything I have a source for Kings information on, it is injuries. I can't guarantee you that it isn't a concussion (I don't know anyone in the organization) but it doesn't seem like that is realistic.

No clue about a concussion, but if that is what it was, couldn't he be doing more non-contact work than just "light passing" with Justin Williams? Sounds like a shoulder to me, but who knows i'm not a doctor........

hope he makes his return at EDMONTON on the 15th, or on the 12 against the Stars at home. as long as he's 100% though.

He's still going on the ice for conditioning though. I don't recall many players suffering from concussions taking on-ice workouts as sudden movements can cause aggravation.

Or ribs which are notoriously difficult to deal with. As my brother put it, having bruised ribs is worse than having them broken because they seem to take longer to heal.

These vague upper and lower body injury reports are the pits.

Regardless, they said he could miss 4 weeks, which is 15 or so games. If things go well, he'll probably be back after the 8 day break, which comes at a very good time since a few Kings need to get healthy.

So much for Smyth having a concussion...

Smyth has flat-out said it’s not a concussion, Nick. So unless you believe him to be lying, I’m not sure why you’d want to spread that.

Hhahaah. That's me. Hammond just blasted me. I just said what I have been told...not making stuff up...but if Smyth says that than I believe him...
