Carolina and Vancouver (Minor, minor deal)

To Carolina: 4th round pick in 2010

To Vancouver: Matt Cullen

First off, I'm not very familiar with the Hurricanes or Cullen in particular so don't get on my arse if I undervalued/overvalued him.

I just thought this would be a minor deal that would help both teams. In Carolina's case, it's time for them to rebuild so getting draft picks, even just 4th rounders, will be very beneficial. On Vancouver's side, they'll want to make a big playoff push this year and one of the few key pieces they still need is a solid 3rd line center who can provide a veteran presence and chip in offensively here and there.

umm its Matt CUllen, not Mark, Vancouver already has Mark Cullen.
Anyways, Matt is worth MUCH more to the Canes than a 4th rounder

Didn't Kyle Chipchura go for a 4th rounder? Cullen isn't worth a 1st by any means, but a 4th isn't good enough.

The Rangers traded Cullen back to Carolina 2 years ago for a 3rd, Joe Barnes and Andrew Hutchinson. Hutchinson is at best a 7th dman. He ended up playing the year in Hartford. I don't think Barnes ever got past the ECHL.

So a 4th rounder might get it done, though more likely a 3rd or decent prospect. He doesn't make a ton of money (ufa next year) and he's still got wheels (though his hands have never been able to keep up with his feet).

I wouldn't mind. We can do the deal tomorrow.

I expect Cullen to go for at least a 2nd round pick in 2010 or good prospect. He's definitely worth more now than he was when Carolina acquired him from the Rangers. He'll be a great 3rd line center on any team looking for playoff depth and can fit in as a 2nd line center should there be injuries. He's got speed, skill, defensive awareness, and is good at faceoffs.

I love how this is considered "minor, minor" because only on HF boards do 3 franchise players and 3 1st round picks need to be involved in order to make a deal "significant".

The Rangers desperately needed to clear cap room at the time and Cullen had three years left on his deal at a significant cap hit. I'd say he has more value now with an expiring contract at the deadline.

What does that deal have to do with Cullen's value today? A throwaway draft pick or prospect isn't going to get you Cullen, who is quality NHL player that can fill a variety of roles.

Mario Bliznak and a 5th. How about that?

The Canes will get a much better offer from someone else. You know that GMs can't get away with lowballing at the trade deadline, right?

too bad canucks dont have a 2nd round pick this year, I would gladly do a Matt Cullen for a 2nd round pick because he is so versatile. I would even put him on the 2nd line instead of Hansen.
so maybe a 3rd round pick + Hansen for Cullen?

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Kesler Cullen Raymond
Samuelsson Wellwood Bernier
Glass Johnson Rypien

I would think Carolina could get a better deal than that. It would probably take at least a 3rd rounder and a desperate team might even flip a second rounder their way. He probably won't be moved until the deadline anyway.

There is no chance of Vancouver making that deal happen.

LOL.

Gillis: Hey Jim, how about Morgan Clark and Kris Fredheim's rights for Matt Cullen.
Rutherford: You'll never get away with this, Gillis!
