Rangers looking shake up the team

Quote:
The Rangers started off the season strong, but they've looked so-so lately and the indications are Sather wants to ignite the team.

Gaborik and Demitra are best friends and played together in Minnesota. It just so happens that Demitra, who has a cap hit of $4 million US, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season .

"They want to do something," a league executive said. "They are talking to everybody right now."
http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hoc...55606-sun.html

According to Bruce, the Rangers have talked to Van about Pavol Demetria's availability if he returns from his two shoulder surgeries Gaborik and Demetria never really clicked in Minnesota. Sather is talking to everyone.

I think Demitra is pretty washed up at this point, but I'm fine with bringing him in as long as we don't give up any legitimate prospects.

Someone tell Sather this team needs a lottery star before he does something stupid like this.

Kotalik, Prospal, Demitra. Patchwork that only increases the result of disappointment at seasons end.

Pretty much.

This team is beyond 1 or 2 holes. We're missing half a ship.

I say ride out the season, sell a couple guys at the deadline, and re-tool in the offseason.

What do you guys think Demitra would cost in a trade? 2nd or 3rd? Thats the big thing for me if he's UFA.

Demitra is not the answer on Broadway. He'd be be in the same role as Prospal. Play him with Gabby and he'd be good, but anywhere else he'd be meh. Which is what we have now.

I thought Savard would have been a good fit....Sather likely thought so too.

Plan B

What they really need is an upgrade vet experience/muscle on the blueline and young hungry snipers instead of grinders

Well I guess there is definately truth to the Rangers actively shopping for a deal. Evidenced by the broadcast a few games back where Micheletti touched on Sather being on the phones trying to work a deal, but in the cap era it being much tougher to do so etc.

As to whether or not it's Demitra? First thing that came to my mind was oh God no!...Then I thought about it more. This is a Glen Sather type of acquisition. Another reclamation, who is a UFA at years end and so if he doesn't work out...he's not returning. But...he is a possible return for a salary dump. Is this how Glen rids the team of Rozsival and the 5 million dollar madness? If that happens, and if that is the return...Glen wins this one hands down.

Lastly though, how many times is Demitra going to be rumored to NY? This is a re-occuring theme now for the past 10 seasons!

Demetria has to play a game before any team will even consider trading for him. Two shoulder surgeries. Of course, that's if Van wants to trade Demetria. Two-three weeks ago,Garrioch had the Rangers inquiring about the Kostitsyn brothers.

While Sather certainly won't be negotiating from a position of strength, I don't see him getting held up at gun point either.

He's dangerous on July 1st, but pretty shrewd with his horse trading.Let's see what he can come up with.

Demitra is a bigger risk than Gaborik, injury-wise. He's fragile as ****... If we could get him for cheap I'll take him.

You kind of contradict yourself here.

I don't see a contradiction. He said Demitra wasn't the answer BECAUSE he'd only be good with Gaborik. We'd still be a one line team, so he wouldn't solve our biggest problems: secondary scoring and toughness.

From a Vancouver perspective: I don't think that Demitra would be that expensive to pry away from Vancouver. He's returning to a line-up that already has several younger and more contract friendly players who have shown that they can play at a comparable level.

If the Rangers don't trade salary, he'd be extremely cheap. Probably a middle-round draft pick or half-decent prospect. Vancouver probably values the cap flexibility the most in the deal.

If the Canucks have to acquire salary, they would probably ask for a player that can help them at third/fourth line center.

Not really, couldn't Prospal move to another line?

The Rangers need to send salary back in any deal bringing in salary.

The feel around here is that Prospal is only good with Gaborik, which, I personally feel, is near 80% true..

Assuming Demitra came, meshed well again with Gabs, and stayed healthy, that would probably be explored. IMO, however, that wouldn't do anything unless our secondary scorers elevated their play. If they did that, though, they wouldn't need Prospal to move down a line, and acquiring Demitra would just end up being redundant and a waste.

I'd move a contract, a B level prospect, and a lower pick (3rd round maybe?) for Demitra.

Actually, come to think of it, with Tortorella's quite annoying line movements and decisions, Prospal would just go on the left wing of that line. He seems intent on keeping those two together.

He's assuming he would play well with Gaborik.

If Demitra plays well with Gaborik, doesn't that imply there will be secondary scoring?

Oh, you would?

Don't think that's a bit much do you? You realize this is Pavol Demitra?
