This would be a genuinely insane move. You're getting back something you gave up, which is now several years older, more worn, and more expensive -- and you're giving up something you've been nurturing for several years and will almost certainly be worth more in the future than it is now. (Unless you think both Andrei and Sergei have both already had their best years , an obviously loony supposition.) You'd get Souray's shot, for sure, you'd also get all the rest that goes with him (not much of a playoff performer, is he, or am I forgetting something?) There are times when retrieving a lost part makes sense -- Rejean Houle in the mid-seventies, even Brisebois, on his return had his moments and his value -- but this is not one of them.
I'd like to get Souray back but as others said it would be very difficult cap wise unless Hammer goes the other way and i don't see it happening.
As far as Cogliano , the guy is probably the fastest skater in the NHL (borh acceleration and top speed) , has good hands and can pull slick moves once in a while but he's soft and very easy to knock off the puck and that we don't need. He's also small and we already have our fair bunch of smurfs so i don't think he's a good fit. We need some guy to create space for our small forwards , not the opposite.
This rumor is bogus anyway so you can all sleep in peace because it won't happen.
I'd do this deal, love the brothers. But business is business. If only we wouldnt be screwed cap wise of course...
Why would you make this this deal?
Anyways, if we make this trade and Plekanec leaves the Habs this summer, we would not have a single forward drafted by the Habs that has more than 12 goals next season and that would be D'Agostini. Unless MaxPac scores more than 12 this season. Thats brutal.
That makes little sense for the Habs with most of the d-men back and Markov probably a month away, we already have 7 healthy NHL calibre regulars on defense. That deal would also weaken our forward group with AK=Souray.
The Oilers lose a year off the 5.5m contract and get two talented forwards. We get an upgrade on D (whoever wants to argue that Hamrlik is better than Souray as a D-man overall needs to watch some Oilers games. Souray has improved so much), lose 2 inconsistent forwards (who might bolt!) and get a mid-high first pick.
It would be the perfect trade for a rebuild-on-the-fly.
How the hell do the Habs win in that????
It would be a huge downgrade this year. Souray is not as good as Hamrlik and we are losing 2 of our top 6 forwards for future help. We need skill forwards NOW, not in 4-5 years. The defense is fine, don't touch it.
Hamrlik's contract hasn't looked bad at all this year with markov out, he's been a tower of strength. without him we'd be with the Leafs and Carolina.
Agreed 100% and kinda laughed when I read his comment.
As for Souray, his contract makes no sense for the Habs to take on. They've got kids to bring up next year to fill in spots (Carle, Weber, Subban) and with Markov, Hamrlik, Gorges, O'Byrne, Spacek and Gill already here it makes no sense to go after Souray. IMO our defense is set and honestly when fully healthy is pretty solid.
If Gainey is going to make a deal, it will be for a scoring forward. But again, I'd like to see this team play some games with a fully healthy lineup before really judging.
