Very different situations, Pitt had to cut salary, and Jagr was among the league's most expensive players (I believe).

The rivalry also wasn't quite what it is now. Caps fans hated the Penguins, but it wasn't really mutual until the last couple years when both teams established themselves as the Eastern Conference's top tier. Since the teams were always in different divisions, there wasn't really any reason not to deal.

Because he publicly stated he hated it in Pittsburgh, and the Pens had to dump massive amounts of salary because they were going bankrupt?

For someone who's been following hockey since '79, one would think you'd know a little more about the details of one of the biggest trades of the past 10-15 years.

Well, it wouldn't happen.

If they were not in the same division however, I agree with Alex28's proposal:
Quote:
Assuming there was no rivalry, Staal and Orpik.

Considering there is a rivalry, nothing.
Even then, I would have a hard time believing the Caps would trade Semin unless he said to them privately, trade me to X-team or I go to Russia.

? The Caps/Pens rivalry in the 90's was pretty damn huge. I noticed that rivalry much more than a flyers/pens one.

BTW stupid proposal.

Some who are penguins fans have this overzealous pursuit of a "scoring winger" that they'll dismantle the team to obtain it and even introduce less than ideal players all to have their NHL10 line balance.

Me personally, I always thought the Flyers were our biggest rivals and if it were not for all those playoff match ups against the Caps there would be nothing to see there. I didn't get up and go running for tickets for Caps games played against the Pens but I sure did for the Flyer's. Caps had some decent teams through out the years but they could not get past the speed bump in the Pens all that much. 98 was almost their year but Detroit had other thoughts. I think if they trade Semin it should be for a really good Goalie and some spare parts. IMHO

I think a lot of the Flyers/Pens rivalry is a personal thing with Pittsburghers in general. I mean of course I see it right now but I don't share the same hatred of the Flyers that fans from Pittsburgh do, but oh man the Caps, now thats a rivalry.

I guess also without those playoff matchups between the Redwings and the Avalanche there would be nothing to see there either....

Also, I don't think that Washington would be in the market for another goaltender. They have Varlamov and Neuvirth in the works, if anything they'd be likely to deal one of their goaltenders, not acquire a new one. What they need is a solid top pairing shutdown dman.

Because the then GM of the Penguins is related to the President of the Capitals.

Both of them were very one-sided...kind of like a big brother picking on a little brother. The Caps hated us, and we hated the Flyers, but because the results were so skewed towards one team it didn't have the same effect as the rivalries now.

2 first and a second once Semin have refused to sign a new deal once again in the summer. If Boston and Toronto can deal forwards refusing to sign a new deal for picks, then why would not Pens and Caps be able to do the same. Sure, they are both aiming to win the cup, but theoretically so are Boston and Toronto as well.
