He said he checked this out with the NHLPA.
His salary is 875k, but with bonuses his cap hit could be more then that (there are up to 850k in bonuses he can reach this season). However, there is a cushion that if these bonuses are reached and put a team over the cap, they can be counted against next years cap. So to be cap compliant, the Flyers do only have to fit his 875k salary under the cap.

Last year there was no cushion that allowed you to apply bonuses to the next season, as the CBA could be re-opened. That is why guys like Kane and Doughty and such counted for large cap hits, team had to also make space for their bonuses in case they reached them.

From the Daily News...

Salary-capping
I have received a lot of questions regarding the salary cap and how the Flyers will fit everyone in. General manager Paul Holmgren has said before that they would like to keep 23 players on the active roster out of the gate. That is the maximum allowed. It makes sense because the Flyers no longer have the convenience of pulling a player from the Phantoms quickly – they aren’t across the parking lot anymore.

Here is a breakdown of the 23 players that I think have played their way onto this team
(listed in order of cap hit with actual salary in parenthesis):

Forwards (14):
Danny Briere - $6,500,000 ($8,000,000)
Mike Richards - $5,750,000 ($5,600,000)
Simon Gagne - $5,250,000
Jeff Carter - $5,000,000
Scott Hartnell - $4,200,000
Ian Laperriere - $1,166,666
Dan Carcillo - $893,750 ($937,500)
James van Riemsdyk - $875,000
Claude Giroux - $821,667 ($850,000)
Arron Asham - $640,000
Blair Betts - $650,000***
Riley Cote - $550,000 ($525,000)
Darroll Powe - $520,000
Mika Pyorala - $500,000

Defense (7):
Kimmo Timonen - $6,333,333 ($7,000,000)
Chris Pronger - $6,250,000
Matt Carle - $3,437,500 ($3,350,000)
Braydon Coburn - $1,300,000 ($1,400,000)
Ryan Parent - $855,000 ($765,000)
Ole-Kristian Tollefsen - $600,000
Danny Syvret - $575,000

Goalies (2):
Ray Emery - $1,500,000
Brian Boucher - $925,000

Total: $55,092,916.00
Salary Cap: $56,800,000.00
Predicted Cap Space: $1,707,084.00

I hope our lineup stays like that. 14 forwards, 7 d. It will be great to have 1.7 million in space at the deadline

From Pierre LeBrun at ESPN...

Quote:
NHL still investigating ...

Just because you haven't heard much about it lately doesn't mean the NHL has backed off on its objections over the contracts signed by Marian Hossa, Chris Pronger and, more recently, Roberto Luongo.

A source told ESPN.com this weekend that the league is still investigating all three deals. An outside law firm was hired to handle the work, which includes asking for documents, phone records, etc. What the league is looking for is any kind of evidence that the teams and agents in question conspired to purposely circumvent the collective-bargaining agreement. In other words, did they tack on some bogus years with low salaries at the end of those deals in order to bring down the average yearly cap hit?

In my mind, it'll be tough to prove. But the league is doing its due diligence. If there's any proof of wrongdoing, the ultimate penalty would be voiding the contract, although other penalties include large fines (up to $5 million) and potential loss of draft choices. The fly in the ointment for the league is that the NHL Players' Association would object to all of this and the situation would end up in arbitration before anything is done. But again, that's only if the investigations dig up anything.

Here are the breakdowns of all three deals:

Still doesn't make sense because Pronger's contract doesn't come off the books if he retires. They still have to pay it.

Anyone else starting to wonder why we signed Lapperiere to a 3 year deal? He's also 35+ so it counts no matter what.

if we INTENDED to circumvent the CBA even if we were mistaken about the actual rules (and hence failed at circumventing the CAB because we were just too stupid to get it right) then we should be held to the same standards as those who actualy did it and, to this point, got away with it. My only problem with this whole "investigation" is that they let the Redwings do the same thing and haven't even considered examining them for attempting to circumvent the CBA.

Yeah, but what are those "same standards"?

I still can't get over spending almost 20% of your cap room on Briere and Hartnell. Cup winners need to maximize the full amount of the salary cap in order to win and those 2 contracts are a problem imo

So I have no idea if this has been talked about, or where to post this, but I got a text from the Flyers saying they are putting Dave Schultz into the Flyers Hall of Fame on November 16.

The only one who I want to see signed next year is Betts. Guy has just been awesome. He does exactly what we need him to do.

Emery could go either way. If he gets signed that's great. If he doesn't I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Coburn - again, I wouldn't lose sleep over. He's been getting better as of late, it's good to see him scoring some goals from the point. However, who knows what he is going to bring to the table next year.

Wanted to ask.
Does anyone know how we are looking since Jones got picked up by LA?

So with no cap room, and no draft picks, and no

really young chips to trade for established veterans ---what in the world do we do now??? Our D is solid and once Coburn leaves, the top 6 are set with Pronger/Timmo/Carle/Parent/Bartulis/Marshall.....but the forwards are troubling beyond the top6 and the goalie situation is dire!!!! (Briere/Richards/Carter/JVR/Hartnell/Giroux) By the way we dont have any of the top 3 picks left for our next draft - is that correct? and no money....

The worst possible thing that can happen is probably Gagne becoming a cap casualty.

Correct.

Troubling forwards beyond top 6? When our top 3 is scoring, all we need is defense and energy from the bottom six. If you've watched lately, Lappy is the best shot blocking forward in the universe, Pyorala is establishing himself as a decent 2-way player, Nodl and Kalinski are working their tails off to stay on the team, Asham is having a mistake free year imo, Carcillo is.....Carcillo.

When Betts gets back we may just have one of the best 3rd lines in the league in Lappy/Betts/Carcillo.

I think we're in good shape talent-wise (just not sure if last nights game was a fluke). Let's see how the next 6 weeks pan out and we'll find out if the goalie situation is dire.

our bottoms six is fine for role players, but ideally id want 1 more offensive guy to play with Gagne and Pyorala.

Cullen and Koivu have been mentioned.

I do like Matt Cullen. I wonder what it would take to get him here?

Hartnell-Richards-Giroux
JVR-Carter-Briere
Gagne-Cullen-Pyorala
Carcillo/Powe-Betts-Lappy

Id say a guy like Matsumoto or Ross and a 5th or 6th would probably work, unless there are other teams bidding

The problem is that Asham is still on the team, will play and also with a Gagne that is coming back, it will make it hard for Cullen to join the team.

Gagne-Richards-Pyorala
Hartnell-Carter-Briere
JVR-Giroux-Asham
Carcillo-Betts-Lappy
