Tony Talk - December 9, 2009

Good old Tony - ever the optimist

"There's no third line," says Gallagher. "Kyle Wellwood is a joke (a non-entity) . . . The fourth-line centre, Ryan Johnson, can't play."

"They (the third and fourth line players) can play at the NHL level," he says, "if you don't have very high expectations."

However he does like Ovechkin.

Dreadful in Nashville

Fatigue a problem? Practising too hard? No legs in Nashville.

If this homestand goes sideways, that could be the season.

Penalty kill is horrible - paralytic.

Cannot play worse than in Nashville but how much better

Beginning to have questions about the coaching staff (really??? - just beginning?)

Jannik Hansen is a fourth liner, no hands. If he is on the second line there is a problem. Grabner or Demitra are needed back.

Bring Bolduc back and make a deal for a third line centre.

A good portion of the roster is under-performing.

Skating in quicksand the last two games. Big mistake to practise hard on Friday and play early Saturday. And practising too hard before Nashville. It is a coaching issue.

Evander Kane - great as an 18 year old. Good on the third line with Peverly and Armstrong. If he gets some time on the PP he could really take off.

Alex Ovechkin - very reckless. Hits and collisions are going to slow him down as his career goes on. Best player in the world right now. He needs to cut back on his own hitting - cut back on contact generally or it will cost him down the road. Similar to what happened with Bure although Bure was not as physical in intiating contact and not quite as big as Ovechkin.

I agree with him about Ovechkin. He's the closest thing we'll ever see to another Pavel Bure, and if he doesn't tone it down a bit, he's going to end up like Pavel did.

Oh Tony. I actually thought he was turning the corner at one point, but it seems he's back to his Gollum-ly self.

The ridiculous part with his suggestions, is that he'll turn around and criticize them if the team were to implement them anyway. Bolduc? Maybe, but that's not THE answer that the Canucks are looking for right now. Third line isn't terrible. Kyle has been better, remains to be seen.

Hansen could very well be a 2nd liner. He hasn't looked out of place. Demitra is not back anytime soon, so why bother with that Tony? As for Grabner, he would be first in line for a tongue lashing from Tony the Troll the second he had an off night.

Oh, to be a sportswriter. That, and weatherman have got to be the 2 most credibility defying jobs on the planet.

The stuff about excessive road practices is interesting, and the first plausible explanation we've heard for them coming out so flat the last two games.

Rest of it looks like a highlight list of every complaint posted here, though. Only major one he missed was the underperforming D.

I can see the hard practices being an issue. With all the money spent on fatigue management, it would be pretty wasteful to blow it on running the players ragged in practice.

Other than that, wow, is that ever a glass half empty piece. Not a positive word in there...

If they weren't practicing hard, Tony would say that they're not working hard enough in practice, AV is too soft, etc.

Easy there Tony, you are coming extremely close to being critical of your BFF's personnel decisions.

The guy criticizes Vigneault for his affinity for 'pluggers' yet is calling for Bolduc to replace the most skilled player in the bottom 6 that just so happens to be scored against the fewest of any player in the NHL at even strength?

More criticism directed at Vigneault? Schtick it up your...

Still no mention of the PP? Weak.
