Flyers Take Shape After Several Trades

Flyers GM Claudio Mannarino has been busy making a few deals before the waiver draft. This afternoon he closed his third trade in about a week.

The team traded Sami Salo one of the GM’s favourites. “We hated trading Sami but we received a young defenseman in Zyuzin and a good prospect in Suglabov and a 4TH round pick. We wish Sami the best he’s really stepped up his play the last 2 years and was our best defenseman at times.” Suglabov will decide the winner of this trade however, as the dynamic forward can be electrifying but at times disappears, especially in the defensive zone.

Another deal saw the Flyers trade Darius Kasparitius and a pick for Shane Hnidy and a pick. This deal was purely a move to trim down the payroll as Darius $3 mil contract was exchanged for a contract under ½ million dollars.

With a surplus of forwards leading up to the waiver draft the Flyers needed to move someone purely not to lose a player before the draft. Unfortunately that player was Wes Waltz. Waltz a smallish but highly underrated center was traded to Detroit for a 3RD and 5Th round pick.

The trade that started this frenzy involved the Flyers and SJ Sharks. The Flyers GM has been highly criticized in Philly for this deal but it was the best one he could make at the time. Many feel the Sharks got the better of the deal by picking up a #1 defenseman who can move the puck and play on the #1 PP unit and also picking up Radek Dvorak the speedy winger who started playing a lot better last year after a few years of injury woes.

“We see the deal as Gomez for Johnson and Dvorak for Grier and a 3rd round pick. Johnson is without question a top 3 defenseman but Gomez is a #1 or #2 centre who gives the franchise versatility by being able to play the wing effectively. For our team, it was a deal we had to make picking up a young player with dynamic skill who has already proved himself in this league and is only 25 years old. With respect to Grier, although he probably won’t put up as many points as Dvorak, has a big body who plays well in his own end. We lose glitter for raw North American power but the past has shown that you can never have enough grit in the playoffs.”

With these trades the Flyers’ manage to reduce their salary base, get much younger and seemingly remain a competitive team. These trades will be a big test for the franchise, whom has made the playoffs every year that current GM Claudio Mannarino has been making decisions.

“Hopefully these trades will help us. The only trade we didn’t want to make was trading Waltz. Detroit received a hell of a player but we had little choice with the waiver wire fast approaching. The other trades were meant to keep the team competitive, get younger and reduce our salary structure. Our scouting department is confident that Suglabov will become a scorer in the NHL and that with the additional 5 draft picks will turn up some NHL players.”

Claudio ---
For the record, you got a 4th in the deal with me, not a third.
