Really interesting to see Slovakia in action! Is it confirmed that Ruzicka will be playing in the first game? What about goalies, will Stana or Lasak start against Hungary?

Milan Bartovic - Tomas Surovy - Jiri Bicek + Dominik Granak - Boris Valabik

-goaltending is not resolved yet. Jaroslav Halak of the Montreal Canadiens may join the team.

The team captain is Lubos Bartecko.

Stana is starting tomorrow. Halak will play against Canada at earliest.

One quick correction, Ivan Svarny was not entered into the roster. I would imagine the Washington based GM Peter Bondra is considering Washington Capitals Dman Milan Jurcina.

It is hard to believe it has taken this long for Marek Zagrapan to make his NT debut. I am happy to see him there, and those that say he is another Olvecky are very wrong.

I know Radivojevic is not there for visa reasons. Is there any reason why Juraj Kolnik and Peter Sejna are not there? Also if Zigmund Palffy wants to play in the Olympics, shouldn't he like play in these warm up tournaments? My last question, I know Rudolf and Richard Huna are brothers, but are they related to the Robert Huna on Slovan?

Well, none of the Slovak players from NLA are involved, no idea why. As for Pálffy I hardly doubt anyone could make him play in such a non-important tournament. As for the Huna´s (lol), actually believe it or not Richard and Robert are twins, those two have been playing together for years, there once even was the Huna-Huna-Huna line on Liptovský Mikuláš. Robo had an injury and missed the beginning of the season, so he´s not in such a form as Rišo so far this year.

I´m thinking about renaming this thread, which one is better:
The official big disaster thread or The garbage that tends to call itself the Slovak National Team?

Well, I'll reserve judgement for when he plays completely healthy and for an entire tournament.

I will say that the KHL dudes always seem to unimpress when representing SVK. I don't know what it is. Perhaps I am overrating the KHL. I just expect more from guys like Ruzicka and Kukumberg.

Edit: I read an interview with Peter Bondra yesterday. He said he wants to see Zagrapan again in December before making any sort of Olympic judgement. Slovakia of course has a shortage at C.

Richard Lintner was chosen top defenseman for the Deutschland Cup. From those that saw the games, it was a bit of a strange selection. Lintner was apparently less than impressive in the first game or so. In shootouts versus Germany and the United States he was dynamite, scoring on 4 of 4 chances. Wow. If Bondra takes him and Palffy to the Olympics, they are all set in case of shootouts.

Jan Filc names his roster for upcoming games in eastern Slovakia versus the Czech Republic, Belarus, and Switzerland. The big news is that it marks the return of Zigmund Palffy who last represented Slovakia in Vienna in 2005. The roster includes 17 players from the KHL. Only players that are seriously being considered for the Olympics are included.

Filc says they are looking for a third goalie behind Jaroslav Halak and Peter Budaj. They are looking for 3-4 defenders and for centres. Handzus and Stumpel are a given. Demitra is questionable. Under consideration are Cibak, Kukumberg, and Zagrapan.

Team Slovakia December 14-19

Goaltenders
Ján Lašák (HC Košice/SR)
Rastislav Staňa (Severstaľ Čerepovec/Rus.)

Defenseman
Ivan Baranka (Spartak Moskva/Rus.)
Jaroslav Obšut (Spartak Moskva/Rus.)
Dominik Graňák (Rögle/Šwe.)
Richard Lintner (Dinamo Minsk/Bel.)
Peter Podhradský (Barys Astana/Kaz.)
Tomáš Slovák (Avtomobilist Jekaterinburg/Rus.)
Peter Smrek (Severstaľ Čerepovec/Rus.)
Martin Štrbák (HC MVD/Rus.)

Forwards
Ľuboš Bartečko (SC Bern/Swi.)
Milan Bartovič (HC Liberec/ČR)
Martin Cibák (Spartak Moskva/Rus.)
Branko Radivojevič (Spartak Moskva/Rus.)
Štefan Ružička (Spartak Moskva/Rus.)
Marcel Hossa (Dinamo Riga/Lat.)
Juraj Kolník (Servette Ženeva/Šwi.)
Roman Kukumberg (Lada Togliatti/Rus.)
Ladislav Nagy (Severstaľ Čerepovec/Rus.)
Marek Zagrapan (Severstaľ Čerepovec/Rus.)
Žigmund Pálffy (HK 36 Skalica/SR)
Peter Sejna (Zürich SC Lions/Šwi.)
Jozef Stümpel (Barys Astana/Kaz.)
Richard Zedník (Lokomotiv Jaroslavľ/Rus.)

*there are 12-13 spots up for grabs from this roster.
**They are aware Miroslav Satan still exists but he is not helping his case by not playing right now.

Kopecky is definitely not a lock with the way he´s playing, the players with ? I hope not, two of them have already showed that they´re not good enough for the WHC yet, let´s not even speak about OG. Marcel Hossa should be a locj with the way he´s playing right now. Budaj, well, he´s doing good now, but if he goes back to his usual "form" I wouldn´t be so sure, especially sinc eit looks like Filc is seriously thinking about taking Lašák, who´s playing pretty bad right now in the freaking Extraliga to Vancouver.

If the last WHC and tournaments were any indication, this pretty much means: God help us please.

yeah, whats the deal with Nagy? He shouldnt even be in the B squad. He is getting worse every year. Filc is living in the past. Lasak is also nothing like the man he used to be. But who should be the third goalie? Stana? Probably a better choice right now.

Budaj should just take a nice warm seat on the bench. Halak is the clear cut starter. But anything less than a 7th would be a total failure. Our top end talent needs to do all the work and the rest of the guys should just hold them from not scoring. Also if the powerplay is anything less 80% its not going to be pretty. Hossa, Gaborik and Chara should be enough to score at will on a powerplay.

IMO Staňa should be the obvious choice as he is playing a clearly superior league and is having a pretty good season so far, which Lasak isn´t against a way worse competition.

Obviously Halak will start and Budaj will be number 2 (never know what your going to get from him) but beyond that the 3rd goalie should be Lasak, he's got the experience and is a leader. Why take Staňa to sit in the pressbox just because his stats are better?

Because it makes no sense to taek someone just based on the past experioence? Lasak sucks currently and Stana is performing better than him not just statswise plus he´s got a lot of experience too. I´ve seen Lasak play on Sunday against Nitra and it´s been a while since I´ve seen someone to let in such weak goals even in the Slovak league. He does not currently belong on the NT. Mr. Filc is just proving us once again that he is living in 1999 not in 2009 not only with Nagy, but with Lasak as well.

Lasak will be fine, Stana let in 8 goals in one game last week and his save percentage is below 900. Doesnt seem like better stats to me.

And Staňa made 40 saves out of 41 on Thursday, IMO you have to take the league he plays into account, the way Lasak plays in the Extraliga, young Hudacek could play that and it´s not becasuse Hudacek is something special.
