I'd trade Gomez for Umberger for damn sure! He'll put up just as much production over the coming years at half the price.

Yeah but he came he because he wanted to be a Canadien. Is that so hard to believe?

Anyways, what would he care if Gomez got traded? He may have said publicly playing with Gomez being was a factor in his decision(that was just to appease the fans though imo), but he is playing with Plekanec! And two of those guys are doing a damn good job.

Amazing that anyone actually said no... do people really not understand what the salary cap is?

Umberger for Gomez would be highway robbery for us.

ignoring the fact that Umberger, the younger, grittier player is on pace for 17 more points than Gomez (.71ppg vs .55ppg), the difference in salary is 3.5Million...

for the people against, consider it this way, would you prefer to have:

Gomez

or

Umberger & Beauchemin (or any other player recently signed in the 3.5-4M$ range)

it's a no brainer imo... and kind of pointless anyways since Columbus would never consider something like that unless we were adding enough "+" to Gomez to make it worthwhile, and thus bad for us.

Yessssssss!

Anything to get rid of his contract, but again, I'm very partial in this debate.

Columbus is actually a very interesting trade partner for Habs and Gomez, they might be fooled to think that Gomez is a no1 center and they've been looking for someone to feed Nash for years.

I wish Gainey had the balls to make a trade like this one. I doubt Columbus will take on this contract, though.

Hopefully Gomez starts putting up some points when his buddy Gionta is back. Than again a guy who's making 7+ mill should be able to score on his own. Yeah I'd probably make the trade to clear up some cap space, don't know how well that would go over with the rest of the FA pickups...mainly Gionta and Cammalleri though.

Once we secure Plekanec with a multi-year deal, then I absolutely would.

Getting rid of a deal that ridiculous would not be easy ; plus we'd be getting back a solid contributor. Won't happen though. Sadly

Acquiring him was a stupid idea. Getting rid of his deal would be heaven-sent at this point.

Until someone shows me a link to an interview with Cammalleri where he is asked: "Would you have come here without Gomez?" and he answers: "No." people should really stop passing this around. It sounds like the rationalizations of someone who would put up with an ugly, *****y wife because she bakes good brownies and does the laundry.

Back on topic, obviously I would do it. Younger, bigger, tougher, also shows up in the playoffs. "Problem" is, that he would only be a long term replacement for Metropolit, and the Habs would still be without that true #1 centre that is needed if this team is ever going to be considered in the same sentence as the words "Stanley Cup contenders". Who knows what they could do with the extra 3.5 million in cap space they'd save from this deal, plus Metro's 1 mil, and savings from either Hamrlik leaving or signing for less money than his current, "peak years" contract, though.

That's false. He got rid of Jose Theodore and Sergei Samsonov.

Really, how much of Samsonov's contract did Gainey eat? Most of it.

In the last year of his contract, struggling, and obviously going to sign for much, much less in the coming off season, but that you don't have to re-sign anyway. The Avs took on much less than 2 mil in salary in that deal, and weren't committed to Theo if he asked for more than they were willing to re-sign him to. Much easier to take that than a guy whose contract you're going to be stuck with for the next 4 years.

And the Habs ate around 4 million of Theo's.

But I must add I'm still very fed up with some poster's whining about Gomez's contract and Gainey... I guess I'll have to learn to cope with it though, as we are stuck with him for the next four years... And that's exactly because of that, that I try to look at the positive instead of obsessing over his dollars per point ratio. You've proved your point, Gainey can't move a big contract. You'll have to realize and accept Gomez will be part of our team for the next few years.

Would we be able to get a good top 6 player that we are looking for with that extra 3.5 mil though? Is it worth risking chemistry with players on and off ice? I dunno for sure, but everyone on the team seems to like Gomez, and he is not doing that badly! His contract is ridiculous, but what could we have gotten extra with 3.5 mil that would be worth signing this season?

We have enough D, and enough bottom six players. We need a top six winger, and 3.5 won't get us what we want. It would give us a decent top 6 player that will produce the way Skost is already producing for us...

Like it or not, our team is not changing very much from what it looks like now.

lol is this a joke? umberger, a marginal 3rd line player for gomez? all we need is gionta back to finish off some of gomez's passes and most of you people disappear. get a grip, the guy's just cold right now, he's getting chances every game and developing great chemistry with sergei. try to ignore his salary for 5 seconds.

Have you watched Umberger lately? He's clearly a second line player by now. He's on pace for more points than Gomez. His all-around game is solid. Gomez has more offensive potential, but he's not worth the premium over RJ.
