Flyers claim Michael Leighton on re-entry

MOD EDIT:

Quote:

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have claimed 6’3’’, 186-pound goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

Leighton, 28, has appeared in seven games with the Hurricanes this season, posting a 1-4-0 record with a 4.28 goals-against average and .848 save percentage. In 2008-09, he had a 6-7-2 record with a 2.92 GAA and .901 save percentage in 19 appearances, and his six wins matched his NHL career-high.

This will be Leighton’s second stint with the Flyers, having also appeared in four games during the 2006-07 season, where he posted a 2-2-0 mark, a 3.69 GAA and a .882 save percentage. He was originally claimed on waivers by the Flyers on Jan. 11, 2007.

Guess they're not so hot on Backlund.

Oh God they couldn't even give the kid a chance to prove himself?

I guess with the upcoming schedule it's hard to try that. But Leighton....

I personally think it's a smart move. Leighton has experience, has something to prove, and will no doubt post better numbers on a team that is not Carolina. His numbers last year almost match Emery's numbers this year ....

Not bad at all... Holgrem does'nt panic with the goalie situation and I like that! It's the end of the speculation to trade with the Habs for Halak IMO.

Can't really complain about this move. I'll take him over Backlund every day of the week. It's not like they are claiming him and saying he is the new starter or anything. He'll probably play like five or six games then get sent down when Emery is back.

He wasn't horrible when he played those couple games a few years ago.

The Flyers claimed goaltender Michael Leighton off of waivers Tuesday.

Leighton, 28, was placed on re-entry waivers by the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday. He had originally cleared waivers and was assigned to the Hurricanes' AHL club, the Albany River Rats.

In seven games this season, Leighton recorded a 4.28 goals-against average and .848 save percentage. He last faced the Flyers Oct. 31, allowing six goals in a 6-1 Flyers victory.

Great move as opposed to some panic Halak trade, he may play 1-2 games as a Flyer. Much more confident with him than Backlund in net. Did Leighton play for lavvy ???

I think it's just Homer covering his ass. He's still in hot water along with everyone else. As unlikely as it is, if Boucher got hurt people would be screaming that he didn't have a contingency and Snider would pull the trigger.

If Flyers play good team D...

Leighton's a goalie I can handle going 2-2 with. Adrenaline will kick in for his first 2 starts and reality will probaly poke out it's ugly head for his next 2. I still wouldn't close the book on acquiring a guy like Halak, but Boucher is starting to look comfortable. As others have said, 4-5 Starts from Leighton > 4-5 Backlund starts.

Exactly. He'll be fine as a rarely used backup until Emery is back.

are you guys trying to steal the #1 pick away from us? I cannot believe anyone picked up Leighton. His rebound totals are higher Dwight Howards. Enjoy the falling goat.

Yup. Holmgren is secretly a ducks fan.
