The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have claimed 6’3’’, 186-pound goaltender Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
Leighton, 28, has appeared in seven games with the Hurricanes this season, posting a 1-4-0 record with a 4.28 goals-against average and .848 save percentage. In 2008-09, he had a 6-7-2 record with a 2.92 GAA and .901 save percentage in 19 appearances, and his six wins matched his NHL career-high.
This will be Leighton’s second stint with the Flyers, having also appeared in four games during the 2006-07 season, where he posted a 2-2-0 mark, a 3.69 GAA and a .882 save percentage. He was originally claimed on waivers by the Flyers on Jan. 11, 2007.
I personally think it's a smart move. Leighton has experience, has something to prove, and will no doubt post better numbers on a team that is not Carolina. His numbers last year almost match Emery's numbers this year ....
Can't really complain about this move. I'll take him over Backlund every day of the week. It's not like they are claiming him and saying he is the new starter or anything. He'll probably play like five or six games then get sent down when Emery is back.
I think it's just Homer covering his ass. He's still in hot water along with everyone else. As unlikely as it is, if Boucher got hurt people would be screaming that he didn't have a contingency and Snider would pull the trigger.
Leighton's a goalie I can handle going 2-2 with. Adrenaline will kick in for his first 2 starts and reality will probaly poke out it's ugly head for his next 2. I still wouldn't close the book on acquiring a guy like Halak, but Boucher is starting to look comfortable. As others have said, 4-5 Starts from Leighton > 4-5 Backlund starts.
