It's not unusual for rookie defensemen who are playing their first few games in the NHL to see little ice time. They will also see very little ice time in the 3rd, especially if the team is down a goal or tied. It happened with Del Zotto early in the season, Sangs, and now Heikkinen.

If this team had a veteran 7th defenseman, it wouldn't even be an issue. You can't expect a rookie defenseman who has played less than 5 games in the NHL to log 15 minutes a night. This is one of the downsides to having such a young D corps.

Yeah we really should avoid overworking guys who might be playing in the Olympics and the young talent. But other than them, I don't really care if we run guys like Higgins and Drury dead. Honestly, maybe we should play Drury 30 a night. We would tank this year and he might retire from exhaustion or demand a trade.

Now that I think about it, I agree.
Tank through exhaustion!

What's Tortorella supposed to do? This roster is incredibly thin. He has been given a team mostly incapable of playing his system. My only complaint is that I wish he'd give Anisimov some more consistent minutes so that he could develop. If our kids pan out and this team still fails to compete, then I'll get on his case. In the meantime, let's see what magic Gordie Clark can work, yes?

Heikkinen has never played more than 10 minutes in any of the 4 games. His time has decreased in each game. Sorry but in the limited time he has played,he stinks.

Torts talks about Heikkinen needing to improve his foot speed. He is not going to improve his foot speed at the age of 25.

I say totorolla puts gaborik on the 1st and 3rd line.
2 lines+more ice time=more goals=more wins

Hes also a .500 coach.

Take away that stacked 2004 Lightning team, and his coaching record is an eyesore.

Haha, and I want him to stay too.

On torts though, it's always been his mo to give his top players tons of minutes. It makes even more sense here when the team is struggling to score. Like seeing this a lot more than Renney giving the Orr-Betts-Hollweg line double digits in minutes when we can't score, and putting them out after every single goal that scored by either team and in the last minutes of games when we're down by one. This team needs a win yesterday and if it doesn't come soon it won't matter if the top guys are tired come spring. Again he did this in TB and it worked out pretty well for them.

To think this guy is totally clueless and that us fans can be so certain this quickly that he's not the right guy... I just don't understand.

Why? Youre ignoring several others and focusing on one to point out he has a cup.

For the record, I dont think hes totally clueless.

I just dont think a combustable guy like Tortorella is the right type of coach for a team this devoid of talent.

The cup is the ultimate goal, there seems to be a consensus that even if it takes some losing we'd rather that and then a cup than complete mediocrity. Winning a cup is more impressive than a losing season is unimpressive.

Renny was not fired/Torts was not hired by anyone on this board. Regardless of those happy with the moves...it's not on them. Wish your goofy GM happiness for this latest Rangers mess.

What good is gas in the tank when you're not going to race in April?

I'm not saying it's right... it just doesn't matter if they can't win games in Dec.

Honestly, on the list of what's wrong with this team... their ability to play without being gassed come spring is low on the list. By then they could be so far out of it that it won't make a bit of difference.

First of all, that gif is one of the dumbest looking things I've ever seen. Secondly, I don't see how pointing out that this team does not look good enough to make the playoffs translates into we should tank.

Has this team ever tanked? I can't ever remember being in the bottom 3 unless it was pre 1980's.
