For some reason, this reminds me of the guy a few months ago bragging about how he NEVER used an antivirus, and his computer was fine since he never noticed anything wrong with it.
The difference between him and I, then, is that my comp automatically scans every week in the middle of the night, so I haven't had any problems in years and I'm positive.

Well since my 1 year trial of Kaspersky Antivirus 2009 expires in 3 days. I don't know which antivirus program to purchase next.
As of tomorrow (December 2009) which antivirus program is considered the best? Should I go with a new version of Kaspersky again (if there even is one) or buy something else? Over the years I've had AVG, Norton (fail), Kaspersky, and McAffee, so I ever year I always ponder about which program to stick with. Some are good, others are alright, while other (Norton) flat out SUCK.
I just installed this to replace Avast! Free (whose license had expired), and it's like night and day, at least insofar as the apparant drain on my system. Dunno' if it's actually WORKING or not, but at least my computer is back to opertaing like the P4 2.4 powerhouse that it is...: )
I just got a new comp, came with a free trial of Norton, and I get a lot of notifications, one of them being that it blocked a virus even though I was only viewing facebook, and stopped loading the page I was going to. Nothing wrong I guess with being aware, but is Norton really not as good?

What version are you running? I have NIS 2010 and get no such warnings. But I disable the browser toolbar too, so maybe that's why. Aside from not liking the browser toolbar I have no problems with Norton and none of the CPU problems of the past.
I use it because my latest laptop came with an 18 month sub AND I haven't had any issues with it or I would have looked elsewhere.

I put that on my laptop today because I wanted to give it a try and it was time to get a new free Avast serial. It detected and removed a "severe threat" virus that Avast missed. So I replaced Avast with it my PC too. Fortunately it didn't find anything there. It uses even less resources than Avast and installs faster than any other anti-virus program I've used. It's very impressive for a microsoft product.
Well, my computer was running so incredibly slow the guys at Geek Squad didn't even know what it was. I uninstalled Norton Anti-virus and immediately got a ton of speed back. Obviously I would like to get another anti-virus program, but I think I want to try something different than Norton.
Can someone give me any suggestions? I have an HP laptop that runs on Windows XP.
I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials since it was released a few months ago and it works well for me. It's free and doesn't use much memory (35mb right now).
I use Spyware Terminator, which is free and seems to work well. I had Norton for a few years, but after awhile it starts to slow down your computer to the point where you can't really do much on it. Once I got rid of that, I got ST, which doesn't slow down my computer at all, is easy to update and run, and does a good job at protecting me from viruses. Also, I have a lot of spyware programs on my computer (adaware, spybot, etc.) which help to get the occasional things that Spyware Terminator happens to not find. I'd say try this one out if you're interested. It seems to work pretty well.
Personally? None other than a random Trend Micro online scan which is always negative. For other people I've been using the Essentials lately when I build. The only thing I question is the 'too many eggs in one basket' theory of security with having a MS product protecting an MS product. But for the people I'm giving it to, it's fine.
