GM Game #2 Final Roster Thread

Post your final lineup in here whenever you're finished. Give your own detailed opinion of your team and throw some thoughts at others' rosters if you wish.

Do not "reserve" a post in this thread. Only post when you're ready, and this thread is ONLY for lineups and a little writeup. No salary, trades, or signing information are to be posted here.

------

The new-look Lightning will come into the 2010-2011 season with high expectations.

After completing a large re-vamp of their team at the end of the past season and this offseason, the Bolts have solidified any holes they used to have. Two years separated from last place, the Lightning look to be one of the top contenders for the upcoming season.

The first line consists of two returning players in Malone and St. Louis, and newly acquired star center Nicklas Backstrom. Closely following is our second line of Tanguay, Stamkos, and Boyes. These first two lines will provide plenty of scoring for us, and has a good balance of everything. The third line is one of the best in the league. Two veterans who "still have it" in Halpern and Guerin, and a future top 6 talent in Carter Ashton. The 4th line of Downie, Konopka, and Boogaard is hands down the most rough and tough line in the league and will scare any opponent, in turn for some unnecessary penalties.

The defense consists of 4 returning players: Hedman and Ranger, who are both developing into better players by the day; Ohlund and Walker, who are the returning veterans who will mentor them. The second group is a pair of free agent signings; Corvo and Seidenberg. They'll blend very well together and provide a good bit of offense.

In net is where the improvment is transparent the most, with the acquisition of Vezina Winner Tim Thomas. Niittymaki is one of the most solid backups in the league and rounds out a high-quality duo in the crease.

If chemistry finds itself in these lines, look out for the Lightning in the playoffs.

Bernier-Hodgson-Hansen
Glass-Rypien-Grier
Carter

Neidermayer-Mitchell
Edler-Ehrhoff

Call ups: Beleskey, Bolduc, Shirokov, Oberg, C. Schneider

We think the core of this playoff final team is fantastic, and we retained it, and added a few pieces.
The team is heading into the season with players like Raymond and Kesler and Ehrhoff having proven they can be relied on for big roles and with another season under their belt we're confident in them. We're bringing up prospect Cody Hodgson who suffered a back injury last season and was unable to make the team out of camp. We feel Cody is a future captain of this team and we're letting him play big minutes next season and are working with him on his defensive game. Re-signing defensemen Scott Neidermayer and Willie Mitchell gives us some of the best depth in the league, with 2 young studs in Edler and Ehrhoff working their way up the ranks. We acquired defensive forward Mike Grier to solidy our checking line, and Paul Mara to bring in some depth D. And to top it all off, Roberto Luongo and Andrew Raycroft, who proved to be a great tandem last year.

Anyone would be hard-pressed to look at the Phoenix Coyotes organization from top-to-bottom and not see that its 2010 playoff run was not a fluke. The Coyotes were aggressive at the deadline bringing in Alex Kovalev, Matt Stajan and Alex Ponikarovsky without giving up any key contributors on offense or defense. Peter Mueller was of course the highest-profile player we gave up, but in Alex Kovalev, Stajan and Poni we significantly upgraded our offense, two-way play, and special teams.

And while it was hard for us to say goodbye to Petr Prucha and Lauri Korpikoski, we were able to bring in Stajan and Poni, both strong two-way forwards who can deliver more offense than we were getting from Pru and Korpi. Add to that Stajan being a top face-off guy, giving us 5 of the leagues top 36 face-off specialists, and Poni providing another big body to go with Taylor Pyatt for the net presence that again we were lacking.

Prospects Jonas Ahnelov and Nick Ross were dealt, but we have the #6 overall pick in 2009 in OEL coming in from Sweden; Chris Summers, our 1st round selection in 2006 who finished his four-year career as Captain of the University of Michigan Wolverines; and Maxim Goncharov, who's been playing top minutes in Russia and ready to crack our NHL blueline.

We also added some depth to our prospect core with Ilya Zobov, Bobby Sanguinetti, and goalie Martin Jones.

We enter the 2010-11 season primed and ready for a deep playoff run. We are deeper than we were last year; our prospect pool is a year older and we expect Kyle Turris, Mikkel Boedker, Viktor Tikhonov, Kevin Porter, Brett MacLean, Bobby Sanguinetti, OEL, Summers, and Ilya Zubov to be ready when the call comes in to pack their bags and get from San Antonio to Phoenix.

And we're more than $3M under the cap.

We like where we are and like where we're headed. We're set for the 2011 draft with a 1st round and three 2nd round picks.

I kicked ass.

Added a franchise player, locked up Pavelski for a decent term, Marleau for life, and Setoguchi to a one year cheap deal, which he will be RFA again next year. We retained everyone who went to the WCF except Murray, but we added Hall, Sbisa and Madden.

Comments:
The Colorado Avalanche feel that the team has improved quite a bit over the period. Trading Marek Svatos in exchange for rental forward Lee Stempniak was the only vital move that they had made. After making the playoffs, the Avs are looking forward into the future. They also traded for Chris Higgins, who filled the gap of a proven top six forward come playoff time. The line of Woltek Wolski, Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk will bring a line of scoring, and proven offense. Re-signing both Kyle Quincey and Woltek Wolski was vital for this team, seeing that both have been very good for the team.

Some free agent signings include the likes of Slava Kozlov, who is an under-rated two-way player who has great leadership skills and will play along side Matt Duchene to give him tips and improve his game, along side Slava, is Andrew Ladd, the young left winger is a power-forward that can also put the puck in the net and play in any situation. The offense has definetly improve since the start of the season. Fernando Pisani is another late addition to the team, giving the Avs another two-way winger who can play the body and kill penalties.

The Avs called up three players, T.J Hensick, Chris Stewart and Tyler Weiman, all RFA's and all looking to be effective and keep on the avs line-up. The defense looks good aswell. Avs signing Kevin Shattenkirk to an entry-level contract, playing him with Scott Hannan, The Avs had lost many players including captain Adam Foote, Brett Clark, Ruslan Salei, Darcy Tucker and back-up Peter Budaj. But overall, the Avs feel that they have improved in the long run, and will hopefully be contending for the playoffs yet again.

Dallas Stars

After missing the playoffs for a 2nd season, the Stars made a point of improving their defense. The past 2 years, Dallas went with a very young and inexperience group of defenders. This year, Dallas added Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis while moving out Matt Niskanen and Trevor Daley. Furthermore, Ivan Vishnevskiy will play his rookie season as a PP specialist with Dallas carrying 7 D on game day. Stephane Robidas, Karlis Skrastins, Nicklas Grossman, and Mark Fistric return with the Stars.

Marty Turco was a fixture in Dallas' net for nearly 10 years. However, this season, Dallas begins a new journey with Pekka Rinne as the Stars starting goaltender. He posses some of the same puck moving skills as Marty Turco, but he is a large goalie who can fill the net.

Losing Mike Ribiero in the forward ranks was tough, but it was necessary to improve our defense. Luckily, in the trade, Dallas added Jordan Schroeder. Jordan will start the year as a wing with Mike Modano, but we feel he'll eventually develop into a dynamic, scoring center for the Stars. Rookie forward Sergei Korostin will also make his debut for the Stars after a year of seasoning in the AHL.

Better goaltending, deeper defense, and the addition of Bobby Ryan make Detroit a team to be reckoned with.

Tyler Seguin - Eric Staal - Dustin Byfuglien
Tuomo Ruutu - Jussi Jokinen - Ales Kotalik
Zach Boychuk - Brandon Sutter - Chad Larose
Eric Cole - Rod Brindamour - Darcy Hordichuk

Joni Pitkanen - Kim Johnsson
Tim Gleason - Jamie McBain
Karl Alzner - Andrew Ference

Cam Ward
Steve Valiquette

If I had a little bit more time i would have tried to bring in a guy like Babchuk or Randy Jones to replace McBain, but other than that I'm happy with my roster.

The forward depth is pretty remarkable, but the top end talent is still there with guys like Staal, Seguin and Ruutu. The defence looks weak on paper, but so did Carolina's defence when they won the cup and went to the conference finals, so that shouldnt be a huge issue (especially since I would likely pick up a rental at the deadline). Goaltending will never be a problem with Cam Ward in nets.

If history repeats itself, the 'Canes will follow their bad year with a great one, so I anticipate a playoff berth from this team (in 7th or 8th) and maybe an upset before bowing out in the 2nd round.
