They certainly could. Kubina's a UFA at season's end. He conveniently makes just enough ($5M) to cover the gap between what Kovalchuk wants and what he gets now.

They'd still have $4M left to cover Afinogenov and Little's raises. If they needed even more room I suppose they could deal Lehtonen and continue to roll with Pavelec/Hedberg.

could see a 10-13 yr contract for a guy like Kovalchuk....he is probably the 2nd best natural goal scorer in the league if the oilers could off load a contract like Horcoff or souray and get kovy signed for a 7.5-8 mill cap hit for 10+ yrs I would love it....

Souray to a team with cap space like Dallas(not likely with Hicks financial problems) /Phoenix(maybe new ownership tries to get team in playoffs with big move)/LA(cap space and top team maybe need little more veteran leadership for playoff run) for picks and prospects

then offload cogs,POS,grebs and picks/prospect for Kovy

Tambo should offer him a 12 year contract similar to this:

11 11 7.9 7.9 7.9 7.9 7.9 4.0 1.0 1.0 0.750 0.750

This gives a cap hit of 5.75 million

Selfish selfish, hope he realizes that he will never win with a contract like that. The crappy part is he knows how bad Atlanta needs him.

RDS is very reliable, take it from me. Plus they're the french version of TSN in Quebec.

You're thinking of Hossa.

It may have to be a bit higher than this, but this is certainly the right idea. Tambellini would redeem himself in my eyes if he were to acquire Kovalchuk and sign him to something close to this... but, he needs to do it before the NHL cracks down on front loaded contracts.

Still need a first line center though... get Kovalchuk and Carter?

I really doubt that Kovalchuk will sign here if he becomes a UFA.

I can see the Oilers going after him though, and waste all of July chasing after him while letting other good talent get signed. Then we will get the usual line, "hey we tried!"

I like everyone reactions to this. It's a media report and everyone is taking it as gospel and judging Kovalchuk. But hey I guess as the consumers that's what were supposed to do right?

Nobody has a clue is Kovalchuk wants a deal that pays him a cap hit of 11 million person or if he wants deal that will pay him the league max in one or two or three of years of a multi-year deal. There is no information that says either/or.

I don't think anyone is taking it as gospel. Just something to discuss.

So would you do Gagner+O'Sullivan+Grebeshkov+1st 2010 for a signed Kovalchuk at 10M cap hit?

I would do it if I was Atlanta. Theres no player in the league like Kovalchuk, not even Ovechkin, in the sense that if he walks than that franchise is done.

Oh that's how you start a discussion by coming into a thread and saying this:

"Selfish selfish, hope he realizes that he will never win with a contract like that. The crappy part is he knows how bad Atlanta needs him."

"So he thinks he's worth 2 million more than Ovechkin, and 2.3 mil more than Crosby and Malkin."

"Disgusting."

"Wow uhhh......that's a lot of money. He may be good but, he ain't that good."

Some of the posters are clearly taking the statement in the article as fact. However I will acknowledge the posters taht are discussing the fact that he may want the 11 million in a couple of the seasons of a long term deal.

From what I gather he wants 11mil over the next 10 years.

This quite possibly could be the end of the thrashers if they lose Kovalchuk and even if they sign him it could mess them up. I think their best option is to try trade him for cheaper less talented stars.

thats the issue....he has them over a barrel and he is asking for all he can. once he hits the open market he wont get that much....but also once he hits the open market Atlanta is screwed unless they can get something for him that has star quality.

Okay....should we throw up the comparison that a guy that potted 65 goals in one year makes less than 11 million?

Fact is, nobody in this league besides Crosby, Malkin, or maybe one of the top goalies deserves to even think they should make as big of buck as number 8, let alone more.

Trade Horcoff and POS and 2nd rounder 2010 for unsigned Kovalchuk. If we re-sign Kovalchuk while he's here, kudos to Tambo. If we don't...well we have a ******** of cap space AND still have our 1st rounder.

But Waddel isn't stupid to pick up Horcoff....or is he?

Kovalchuk would never survive playing in the western conference. This guy is all flash and no bang. I mean, he was completely shut down by PHANEUF of all people.
