12/21/09 Do you like nicknames for players?

I'm going home for the game tonight, and driving back to the office tomorrow morning, so the news thread will be late, but its not like there's that much to report on this week, and most people seem to be on holidays. I'm not worried.

Interesting that I can't find that Joanne Ireland piece on the Journal website. I'll update the news if I see that it makes it online.

I like the nicknames fans give players, but the ones players have are 99% so unorginal that they're terrible. Usually, it's some variation of their name with "ee" added to the end.

My fav nickname was Noodles for Jamie McClennan, because it just didn't make any sense.

There are some good ones out there - Tico for Raffi Torres, Chopper for Mark Lamb (Sorry Captain Moron, er Moreau), Killer for Doug Gilmour, the Grim Reaper for Stu Grimson, the Moose for Mark Messier - but most are entirely unimaginative.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ckey_nicknames

According to that, Mike Green's nickname is Game Over. WTF?

Trouble is, half the guys on your list are retired and from another era. Like another poster said, most nicknames these days have an ee on the end of them. Now I know hockey players aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, but surely they can come up with some better handles. I think a lot of the old nicknames actually came from sportswriters. Come on...Stollee??? How about "Buster" to recognize all the broken sticks he used to have. Instead of Greenee, how about Chuckles (Chuck) for his fun loving comments.
