Really quite sad. The Oilers are working hard, but outside of a few instances they have AHL talent in primary roles.
No checkers to speak of
No first line center anywhere to be found(An overrated/overpaid cream puff who only thinks he can shoot like brett hull doesn't count)
No impact players in any facet of the game(Penner and Visnovsky are close, but are still complimentry players)
Suspect goaltending prospects behind an injury prone(and out) Bulin
Terrible mix of size and roles at all positions(small forwards who get pushed around, too many offensive defensemen)
Not a single NHL level finisher, or even potential finisher on the entire roster(Souray might be the best, and he's a defenseman)
Selfish, ineffective leaders who struggle to keep up in the game
All this on a cap max team.
This team is absolutely no where near a playoff calibre team that their pride keeps deluding themselves with in interviews(likely lip-service anyways). Even if the borderline impossible happened and they made it, they'd get laughed out of the first round due to the sheer lack of grit, finish, tenacity the team has.
This team just so badly needs a rebuild. There are no franchise changing trades incoming, no free-agents that are going to sign, coaches that are going to wave a magic wand. Anything less than a total rebuild and refocus with long term planning is just shuffling chairs on a sinking ship at this point.
