I can't believe this poll is as lopsided as it is. I know Messier could be a real doosh now and then, but come on, it's Mark Messier! Jagr might have been more talented and the bigger offensive threat, so I can understand why people would vote for him. Yet, I just think this should be so much closer than it is. This is coming from a Devils' fan who can't stand the guy, but I gotta go with Messier on this one.
A poll doesn't work that way.
If a player wins such a poll in a landslide, it doesn't automatically mean that everyone thinks that he is the far better player. It just means that almost everyone thinks that he is better.
There is no real correlation between the number of people voting for someone and the difference in skill. If 100 out of 100 people think player A is better than player B by just a hair, the poll is lopsided in result, but it doesn't widen the gap in skill that people see.
No one will say, "gee, player A is better than player B, but not by much, currently the poll is very lopsided, so I'll vote for player B to make it closer".
In other words, this poll tells you who the majority considers the better player, it doesn't tell you by how much.
